Hi Group,

So...has anyone compiled a list of laptops that will run PTLE without major conflicts and problems. I see there are quite a few post in this thread....would be nice to see an nice, neat, organized list of laptops used/reported and their DAVEC test results. It would also be interesting to see if there are any deviations in the DAVEC test results for laptops of the same brand/configuration.

This would be an invaluable tool for people looking to put together a more portable recording solution. Anyone have the time to do that?

What happened to your 002r? Or maybe a better question, what's wrong with it?

i guess I had the power supply problem. they offered to send me the kit, but there was something wrong with my headphone amp as well, so they call tagged it. I got it back a while ago. I haven't had a chance to run davec yet, but I'll do it in the next few days.

Dennis,
That would be great if you would do that. Send me the list by email and I'll put it on the first post of this thread.
Thanks,
Allen

Ok, another Centrino spec...this is an ABS Zensation Z4

1.7 Centrino proc.
1gb RAM
60g 5400 rpm drive
XP Pro

Recording to the internal HD with just the basic mem tweaks:
32+12 would record on all tracks for about 2 minutes before any errors came up.

I could get 32+17 but it would give a CPU warning after 30 sec. of recording on all tracks.

Can't wait to see how it does with an external drive
And not to mention whether or not it will bounce a good-size session to disk!

Is there a recommended lap top for the 002r that maybe not so leading edge with high track counts but still a good machine for around the $1000 mark ? I probably will only need 10 simultaneous tracks for recording, but I’d still like the most powerful machine for my money. I’ve seen the Toshiba Satellite A25-207 for $1150 – the specs look good for the money – is something I could use ?

Thanks,

The Toshiba A25 model you are considering has the AliCyber Aladdin-P4 chipset. This sound like an AliMagik chipset, which may cause problems with PT. It also has a 4500 rpm HD, which is not as desirable. If you could find a similar laptop with at least a 5400 rpm HD and an Intel chipset, it would probably be fine.

Yea best to stay away from those Ali baba chipsets with Protools. I did see one guy get his working with it though lately on a laptop.
Stick with Centrino Laptop Solutions.

Yeah, but is anyone on a Centrino able to bounce these sessions to disk? My 1.7 machine gets 32+17 on the DaveC, but I can't record 8 tracks for more than a couple of minutes without errors...and BTD errors are like a bad joke. DaveC numbers are misleading if you can't do real sessions.

Ever try recording or bouncing with an external drive?
