888 Synced Internally Sounds Better?
Just wondering if you've experienced the same thing. I work in a studio where we
do a lot of post work. We have house sync (video blackburst) and my 888 is resolved to it via a Video Slave Driver. Lately though, I've been turning off the VSD and just letting the 888 sync internally whenever I do not need to lock Pro Tools to timecode (such as when doing a radio spot), and I have experienced an improvement in sound quality. I know that a good clock is essential to good sound in digital audio. Just wondering if anyone out there has experienced this too. Cheers!

Re: 888 Synced Internally Sounds Better?
That's not altogether surprising. A few months back there was an article in TapeOp magazine I believe regarding clock issues. Among other things it stated that by slaving your I/O to an external master clock source, it has to ignore its own internal crystal and receive the external clock into a phase lock loop circuit that is inherently less stable than the units own internal crystal, no matter how good the external master is. Aside from doing an A/B comparison, I'd use the old earflaps to determine the best scenario, which it sounds like you already have.

Re: 888 Synced Internally Sounds Better?
My ears tell me that it really depends on the external clock. An aardsync clearly improves the sound of the 888. Another clock might make it sound worse than it's internal crystal.

Re: 888 Synced Internally Sounds Better?
I did tests using an Aardsync II and it vastly improved the sound quality of ProTools. Especially if you have other non Digidesign gear connected with digital I/O.
Much more open and dimensional sound. Way less jitter.
