Default I\'ve been looking on eBay......

And I think I can afford a TDM system now. Right now, I work with Sonar, I put together music for Solo artist, or Singing groups to sing over. Most of the work is done in my garage, but I'm looking ot expand. Right now, I'm interfacing to Sonar through an O2R96, through ADAT. If I want to keep my mixer, and go into ProTools, what would I need? The connector on the core card looks like a DB25, is that wired TDIF? If I were to get a TDIF card for my O2R96, would I just need a cable to go between the two??

Interesting idea, but it won't work. Pretty sure that's a proprietary connector; lots more pins than a DB25 (haven't pulled one out to look at it for a while). You need an interface attached to a core card, or you'll get error messages and Pro Tools won't launch. If you want to go digital between an 02R and ProTools with a Mix system, you could get by with an 888|16, as the AES I/O will pass 24 bits. You could also consider an ADAT bridge interface. Limited to 48k sampling, though. If you're going to an HD system, then there are a variety of I/O options available. Check the products section.

The connector on the core card is for Digidesign interfaces only. Plugging your mixer in to that connector may not be a good idea. I don't know for a fact, but there's the possibility there's some voltage on some of the pins. You could end up frying the mixer, or even worse, the Digi cards. Again, just speculation, but it seems a little risky to do the standard "smoke test" to find out.

You don't mention if you are looking at older Mix systems or the newer HD systems. That will have a lot of effect on your I/O options.

One thing for certain - whether you damage equipment or not, Protools will not run without proper hardware, which for tdm is at least one (core) card and at least one proper external digi interface.
