This could be a real can of worms as mixers are a very opinionated topic here

However, I'd recommmend a nice little mackie 1402 or 1202 or look at their new series. Nice sound and plenty of room to grow for you. Just pipe the TRS balanced out into your MBox. If you're going to do any kind of a signficant cable run from the mixer to mbox make sure cables are balanced (TRS).

MBox can only do 2 in at a time. The XLR has a TRS in the middle as well. Even if you use the SPDIF in and get another converter you can only record 2 at a time. You need a 002 to do more then 2 input...

All you'd get is two tracks of the external pre mics, as usig the insert returns would break the normal between the internal pre and A-D.
The M-Box does two tracks at once max, that's it. If you want to record more than two tracks of drums, you need to upgrade to an 001 or 002/002R.

you still could use all 4 pres (still just 2 channels into computer) if you used the mixer like an effects unit put the out from the Mbox pres (out from the TRS insert) into the aux input of the mixer next to the mixer mic pres then back into the the inserts, if you get my meaning. But it would be another thing in the signal chain, so it better be good mixer/cables.
