Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626, MBP
The system: 10.5.7, PT 8 CS3. MBP SR 2.6, 2GB ram, brand new 500GB GT050Q from Glyph. Glyph is in FW800 port, ProFire2626 in FW400 port.
The details: I wasn't having these problems recording to the internal 7200rpm drive in my computer. Now that I'm running off the Glyph, I'm getting stuttering and clicking in both playback and record. The errors ARE being recorded and Pro Tools isn't stopping to say there's an issue. I find this strange in itself since Pro Tools seems to be usually very sensitive in this regard. The recorded errors also sometimes manifest themselves as short buzzes in the audio, like a single sample is repeated very rapidly for a split second. It doesn't matter what the buffer setting is, it doesn't matter if "minimise I/O latency" is checked. It doesn't matter what the hard drive buffer level is. The problem is always there when dealing with sessions on the glyph Just for kicks, an unrelated problem is a constant clicking through my speakers plugged into the 2626 now that the Glyph is part of the equation. I bought a Glyph so I wouldn't have to put up with this kind of nonsense! Anyone have any ideas? |

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
try daisy chaining the glyph to the interface via fw 400, see if that helps.

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
What is the drive formatted to? for example, Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
You can find this info in Disk Utility. O-B |

It's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I didn't re-format it out of the box.

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
Ugh, I believe daisy-chaining MAY have fixed the problem, but it's hard to hear over the constant clicking and white noise in my speakers whenever there is hard drive activity on the Glyph. The noise is MUCH worse using the daisy chain method and is impossible to work through.
...any suggestions? |

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
Yes, get a FW800 ExpressCard for the Glyph and keep the interface on the internal FW400. This is the ONLY way to separate the two busses and avoid traffic errors like you're seeing. The next best way is what you're doing now.
ExpressCards are as little as $55 at Other World Computing. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apiotek/ECFW2B/

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
Having read various posts around the place, I didn't anticipate this as being an issue at all.
Regarding the hard drive electrical noise I'm hearing through my speakers, this an issue with them being on the same bus? I've got a bunch of USB drives and don't hear a thing. Thanks guys. |

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
USB is going to be on a separate buss than the internal FW buss, but USB drives are not supported with ProTools, nor is recording to the internal system drive. Digi is VERY SPECIFIC on how to make this work on a Mac MBPro.
As far as the clicking, are you certain it's related to the drive and NOT a digital clock issue? What is the 2626 referenced to for digital clock?

Re: Clicking/stuttering during playback/record...brand new Glyph GT050Q. PT8, PF2626,
Yes, I know about the supported drives thing, hence buying the Glyph. I've recorded a bunch to the system drive though and not really had any issues. However, that was all fairly low track count stuff (and not really important stuff anyway.) Now I'm doing bigger and more important projects.
I'm certain it's not a clock issue. You start the drive, the clicking starts. Access the drive/hard drive activity light, noise is louder. |
