Didn't know that! Thanks Marsdy! Keep up the good work angry mob! ;-)

I can understand your reasoning and wish it were true. In reality I think it is a bit more complicated then that ...

It should be. Avid dealers are supposed to know about it apparently. That said, I've looked at KMR, Jigsaw and DV's websites and none list it.

The basic law of Technology is that gets twice as fast and twice as cheap every 6 months.

Are you still lining up to buy a Plasma TV for 10,000 dollars?

My first Pro Tools system was like 15k all those years ago and it was the only option out there .....
These days I can buy myself into Pro Tools starting from a couple hundred dollars which is like TEN times cheaper then it was back then and it will outperform, blow away AND wipe the floor without even blinking compared to what it could do back then.

Taking also into account that over the last 15 years the average cost of life has tripled or more and the general evolution / growth of markets etc blah ... well you do the math but I'd say that's pretty much in line with that plasma TV of yours.

Of course If I wanted to I could still spend that much money and more on a Pro Tools system but wait .... I can do that if I wanted to with a Flat Screen TV as well ....

And your point was ?

Chris

I have managed and owned recording studios for most of my adult life, ever since the introduction of 16-track tape. In all of that time, I have never seen the cost of professional recording to be the bargain that it is today. I realize that there are justifications and comparisons that one can make to help justify their outrage here, but speaking from a larger more general perspective... I have never had it so good.

Just another viewpoint, please don’t kill me.

The more I mull over the pricing, the more I'm coming to terms that this new price is just the price of doing business. At first I was pissed like everyone else, and am still not quite happy with the price. The price jumped considerably, as we all know. But looking at the bigger picture, I think I'm willing to pay it. It is after all only $300 a year. I spend waaaay more than that on useless stuff like coffee and cigs a year and they don't help me make my living.

I think the problem is the shock of a 3 fold price increase. We've used to paying a lot less for many years. But in reality, Avid is in the shi77er stock wise. As Chris has mentioned, they are operating at a loss. I'm looking at it now as me paying to help, albeit minimal, to keep the software I love alive, not that they are going to go under without my "help".

While I don't love how Avid has gone about this, and I surely think their stock answers to the questions Russ posed are extremely weak, at best, But what do we expect them to say? "Sorry guys, we blew it. If we change the price to $150 can we still be bro's?" Ain't gonna happen even though I wish it would.

Looking at it from their perspective, I get it, even though I don't like it. I also have a business to run and "$5 a hollar" VO spots can't pay my bills. And my prices continually go up, as does everything else like software, so I can continue to stay in business, pay my bills and support my family. I'd imagine Avid can't afford to do $99 - $150 native upgrades anymore. (HD, IMO, is a whole different matter though. I think their upgrade prices should be MUCH lower considering the price of entry)

Believe me, if there was a DAW I liked even remotely as much as PT I'd be out. But PT's simplicity just makes sense for my workflow. I don't know, maybe I have a bad case of battered wife syndrome with Avid?

Thanks for that post Vocalvoodoo. I think that your opinion deserves to be heard equally loud as all the other ones out here. Not only by Avid but also by others.

I think your honesty when saying you look at what is out there is sincere and justified. I think Avid customers set high standards and I think Avid does their best to meet these standards and even if not always perceived that way, tries very hard to please everybody.
If I know my colleagues on the development side even the tiniest little bit I also firmly believe that these type of comments and criticisms will encourage them to make sure your faith will not prove misplaced in the future.

Thanks

Chris

Studio 1, Reaper, Nuendo...All great programs. But ProTools is getting better and the old versions are not being abandoned. PT will copy these other DAWs and improve upon those features...I'm seeing it now. This is the best PT ever.

But they are chasing money that does not exist so the company must downsize. The recent 200 person layoff is part of that. The sound and picture products are getting MUCH better but the economy still sucks and they must work for the quarterly stock price goals.
AT this point it's advantage = users.
At this point it's also disadvantage = investors.

PT10 their best ever
The new Media Composer 6 also the best ever.
