There so many reasons why this nasty error message occures...


Some say the reason is Hyper Threading (not in my case)
Some say using the system drive (not in my case)
Some say plugins are the reason (not in my case)


This error happens on both os (Osx and Windows 10)


So some say the windows defender or another virus program is the reason...
(not in my case)


I use HDX and had this error on low latency or higher values...


At last my problem was the cache Setting... I got the error when the cache was full...(strange, cause the setting was 24gb.i have 64gb Ram) Then i tried to set it to normal (no cache)... No problem, cause my Projects are on a NVMe SSD... No 9173 Error anymore... HT works fine... I still get the error sometimes, but not very often...
I think Avid should work harder on Protools Ultimate... On Logic Pro X and Cubae and Reason...no errors at all... Only Protools is an "error machine"

Pro Tools isn't optimised for any resloution above 1080p and it appears that Avid haven't optimised their software for Metal which was introduced in El Capitan (I was told to resolve my issue to go back to Yosemite!!).

I've been running PT Ultimate 2018.12 on a nMP, 12 cores, High Sierra with a 4K monitor for months. Smooth as silk. No crashes and/or error messages.

Not sure where you get this info but all my colleagues also use single or dual 4K with PT for years...
