I usually never have to DeEss if i EQ correctly
When going for a highly compressed vocal sound, deessing is often required. . . simply because the Sssses have the least energy and the compressor releases making the Sssses too loud. When going for this type of vocal sound, I usually use light analog compression on the way in. The first PI is either Sony or McDSP EQ, then F3 (hi-pass), next a full bandwidth compression PI, then Phoenix (optional),and finally the MC2000(optional).

...I know you guy's will think this is crazy, but I find that actually finding he problem spots in the vocal track and then automating volumes down is the best solution. It can be pretty time consuming but it works great.

I like a similar technique - record with outboard compressor, then on playback, eq, compress again, then de-ess.

the compressor/eq thing is a good solution but does require a multiband (not mulletband) compressor to be set differently and in parallel with the frequency in question, which can be tricky to set up.

Another trick i have used is to loop an "essy" area, then boost the suspected frequency to hear it at its most offensive peak and then use that exact dial setting to do the attenuation, which then has to be compressed using an eq gate so to speak.

I had a rapper that had a big space between his front teeth. there was nothing to do, they came up everywhere. Select the offending sounds and cut them to another track. treat them how you want, even with automation. case solved. works for pops and everything else too.
good mic technique is the best de esser

I know it's not a plug-in, but has anyone used the Drawmer MX50 De-Esser? I'm pretty intrigued from reading their materials about it...haven't heard it.

The Drawmer is an excellent hardware de-esser. If I wasn't Mixing in the Box then that is the one I would use.

I only tried one time to use the digi deesser, and then I bought the waves deesser. It's much better than digi's.
