If you have a desktop, why would you even want to record to an external drive?

At any rate, USB externals were never supported with XP and PT8. Sometimes even just having them plugged in could cause problems. If you absolutely have to use an external drive, make it FireWire.

Thanks,
One of my sata connections is broken and I need to transfer a few projects to a different drive. If I could record with the usb drive it would save me from moving the projects twice.
Thanks for you advice

I dont think you will even be able to record a 88.2 session on a usb drive. I would think the read write rate would be way to slow and throw you lots of errors.

Windows XP does not support recording to USB drives. Windows 7 does. You can use a USB drive to transfer by saving the session to it(either by drag&drop, or by using Save Session Copy). Performance will be best by moving/copying to another internal drive.
