Then there is the fact that sometimes you want that synthetic doubling sound, especially if you want to get that modern pop or rap sound. In which case simply a delayed second track mixed slightly back might be all you need. Obviously it may require a bit more work than that with eq and compression, maybe saturation, or whatever.

In my opinion one of the best tools for fake stereo effects is PS22 Xsplit, it is a clever combination of panning by frequencies and cross feed delay that sounds the most natural to me saving me in a lot of sessions.
