Re: Help!!! Need Studio Headphone Recomendation!!!
In 25 years, I've never had headphones short out. What exactly is happening? are you perhaps confusing blowing diaphrams with shorting out, or are you frying hp amps, which is possible if indeed the phones were shorting out?
The studio "standards" FWIW, are typically Sony MDR series and AKG 240's. I assume you are using these for artist monitoring when tracking. Hope this is helpful. |

There are some models by AKG that you can replace the cords. I am using some cheap Audio Technica ATH-M3X's. They sound good enough for now. My third pair in a year I think. They are good about returns, replace or even upgrade the models, and never ask questions! My advice is spend more get more... My friend has some expensive ($80) AT's which one of the leather earpieces has almost totally worn away after a couple of years. They still sound pretty decent. He should see if they'll replace them; they might! P.S. Be careful about headphones with 60ohms like many AKG's. You need a headphone amp with these! They now sell lower impedence models that need no amps. |

For mixing and general "engineer" work, the K240M or K240DF are great and pretty flat. I've had mine for over 3 years now and they still work good. They're open cup and 600 Ohms, so you can have them on for hours at a time (contrary to what someone suggested above, don't drive them with an amp, as this defeats the purpose of having a high impedance pair of headphones. You can also blow the transducers if you crank it too much too often.) Finally, if you're willing to spend a couple hundred, try a pair of Etymotic ER-4's. You'll be amazed! My 2 pesos, Al. |

For general purpose studio cans, you can't beat Sony 7506s. For reference and mix checking, Sennheiser HD600s.

You could also try the Beyer 770's. I use them for tracking sessions. Great bass response and the isolate very well. I've had several sets for about 3 years and they have survived many drummers and bass players.
