Default Acoustic Guitar Tones

Does anyone here have any tips on getting acoustic-like tones out of our orange bundles of joy? I've got a decent acoustic with the piezo under saddle strip and an epiphone Ultra III with that "Nanomag" acoustic-like pickup and the end of the neck.

I realize, of course, that I should mic my acoustic for optimum sound quality, especially for serious recording. I would like a simpler method for everyday practicing or just fiddling about. Something that allows me to use the conveniences of direct line recording as opposed to rigid positioning and room prep. I'm thinking more along the lines of useing the Ultra-III for that. I mean, I can obviously just play the acoustic without plugging it in.

I do have one thought to just run something like a Boss AC-3 Acoustic Simulator into the line in on the 11R. Has anyone done something like that and liked the results?

Try this... take one of the old Fender amps and use it with no cab. (I don't have my 11R and I forget what amp model I used) You can get some nice warm "acoustic amp" things with this kind of setup with a bit of tweaking. I get really nice results with this and a Taylor T5.

I'll have to drag out an old Rockman Acoustic Simulater pedal I have and see how it sounds. No high hopes. Gave the AC3 away long ago.

I don't see any 11R patch really making an electric sound like an acoustic but theres a chance that we could possibly come up with a couple of utility patches for acoustics as far as cutting mud or reducing quack. I tend to mike acoustics and run the pickup in as a separate track through my 003. Haven't used the 11R for acoustic.

As a note. There may be enough DSP in the 11R for the 11R team to model some acoustic guitars and do some analysis and possibly generate a relatively convincing acoustic simulator. Combined with something like a Baggs X Bridge or other piezo bridge.

I would also like to know what you think of the Ultra III. Looks pretty interesting. I have a 2008 Epi LP and a 2010 Hummingbird Artist and must admit they hold up well compared to their Gibsonsiblings.

My ultra III has a core piece of functionality not working right now. The USB component. A new guitar is on order to replace it, but not getting here for another month. I'm afraid to play i in the interim, just in case it gets bumped into or some belt rash, etc. What little I have done with it, which was playing the nano-mag into my Fender Super Champ XD and using the Acoustic voicing (#16, IIRC) sound OK. I made a patch on my old GT-10 and it again was simply OK.

I never thought to run a rig and take the cab out of the equation. I'll try that for sure. Thanks!

Let me know how that other bit of hardware, the old Rockman Acoustic Simulator, works.

Thanks for all the ideas, folks. Keep 'em coming.

Yeah, give the no cab thing a spin. I have a patch I use with my T5 and a DADGAD tuning and whenever we play somewhere, sound guys and guitarist always line up to talk to me wondering how on earth I get tone like that. It really is amazing... just too sweet!

Out of curiosity does the USB connection show up as a ASIO interface. That would be extremely cool.

The USB component doesn't work ar all yet. There's a bit of LE sotware that comes with the guitar called Guitar Rig 4 LE, and some driver that isn't ASIO, but is supposed to work with ASIO and show up in the ASIO4ALL list. it doesn't. The USB part not functioning is as simple as that statement. It plain and simply does not function. Non of my PCs and lap-tops even acknowledges it as a device with I plug it in. Cord changes, different ports, on, off, different modes, etc. Just a total disconnect.

I still can try and use the nanomag on the no cab thing going out a regular jack. I find the cleanest Fender pre and go to town.

And then I'll put it back up for a month. I don't want to rish not being able to get a properly functioning one. I hear the Guitar Rig will act as a plug in. If it's got a decent acoustic setting, I'm set there too.

I did an Acoustic preset under the country file. May be a good starting point for you, works great with a Fishman Matrix and 0028EC

Just a little progress update. I selected a Rig that uses the "Lux Normal" amp model, bypassed the distortion in place and did a cab on/off comparision using the Nanomag on the Ultra III. There was quite a positive difference with the cab off. The particular rig had to have a slight volume adjustment on the amp after flipping the cab off, but other than that, it was the same rig. The outcome was pleasing and warm. score one for simple solutions, and thanks dawnsman1.

@Marshall881: Thanks for the link. I'll check it out.
