Re: Mac Pro 5,1 2009 with Xeon 12-core a good choice?
I agree. There would be no profit in it for Apple however.

If I were to put a usb 3 card in the that machine, does anybody know if it would run at USB 3 speed?

You have to boot into Windows, load some drivers and then boot to OSX. Not the easiest thing to do. And it's not consistently working either. |

Re: Mac Pro 5,1 2009 with Xeon 12-core a good choice?
Any time. When I first saw it I thought like yeah this will answer many people's wishes about using Thunderbolt and those still quite capable cheesegrater Macs.
I know cpu's can be changed out and is it possible to swap out what's in the machine for an avx capable chip? Probably not and I don't want to screw up a working machine. But back to the original question: as long as you don't need Mojave an old MacPro will do the job IF it's a 2010/2012 model. AND you don't need to change the video card to get it done either. A machine like I have - 2012 MacPro with 3.46 GHz cpu and 48 gig ram will do the deed. And if you ever want to go HDX you don't need a separate chassis |

Re: Mac Pro 5,1 2009 with Xeon 12-core a good choice?
I watched the video's and did a lot of reading. This is real, WOW!!!!
For those that read you have to boot into windows via Bootcamp, then set it up, and then soft reset in the OSX, you only have to do that once, just to get it all working. After that, just looking via the Bootcamp Selector Screen each time. I am very, very excited!!!! This just gave my 2009 12-core even a much longer life!!!!! |
