Clips move oddity
Hi all,
I'll make this quick. upgraded PTs to 2018.7 on a Win 7Pro SP1 64 comp over previous install all went fine. On trying to trim or move a clip in edit mode the clip jumps halfway between its track and the one below. (see pix attached) but it goes back after letting go of the mouse. it does the move or trim fine but it is annoying. any help will be great. BTW: Nvidia geforse GTX 1050 TI graphics card, Intel i7-4770k cpu, 32 gb ram, 64 bit OS |

Re: Clips move oddity
2018.7 is not supported on Windows 7
Chances are this has to do with Windows Aero graphics. Try switching your desktop to using or not using Aero (whichever is the opposite of what you have on now)

Re: Clips move oddity
If you disable Clip transparency it goes away... but clip transparency is too good to be disabled and still be happy!!
I have a Nvidia 1050 too... maybe it's related.. Migrating to windows 10 is a pain I wanted to avoid as long as possible...

Re: Clips move oddity
I get this also on Windows 7. Would be very interesting to know if this is present on Windows 10. Any Windows 10 users want to respond? Thanks.

Re: Clips move oddity
I have seen this happen on a Windows 10 system, but with an AMD GPU. In this case, I thought it was the AMD drivers that caused it. It started just after the system was upgraded to 2018.7.
I have always found NVidia GPUs and drivers to be more stable in this respect. I use NVidia GPUs on both my Windows systems (and indeed my Mac) and am not getting this issue with 2018.7. Have you tried turning off GPU acceleration in the Pro Tools prefs? If this solves it, it could point to something being broken in 2018.7’s GPU handling. Have you updated your NVidia drivers to the latest version? To the OP - "migrating" to Win10Pro is nothing to be frightened of, but what I would suggest is to not "upgrade" your OS, but to do a new install on a fresh system drive from scratch. It is now a very quick process - I have found Win10Pro installs from scratch to take no longer than 10 minutes. If you use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool on their website to make a bootable USB drive, it compiles the very latest version of Win10, with all the necessary updated drivers and all the latest features, so you don't then have to spend hours getting Windows up to date after install, like you have to with Win7. I've found that upgrades in situ from Win7 or 8 to Windows 10 can literally take days and result in having to re-install key software anyway, so you might as well do a fresh install. You will notice an instant improvement in boot speed and overall system efficiency. While you’re at it, if you’re not already, I would thoroughly recommend upgrading your system drive to an SSD as well. As far as legacy software support goes, my wife is still using Win XP audio software quite happily on her Win10 system. The only time I've ever had issues was when I went from 32bit Win XP to 64bit Win7 and some hardware manufacturers never updated their drivers. I wouldn't think you'd have this issue, as you're already on a 64bit OS. I would also highly recommend installing Win10Pro. If you're put off by the three-figure price for buying this OS, take a look around the internet for an OEM licence key - you can pick them up for £20. The only difference with an OEM key is that it is locked to the hardware you install it on, so if you upgrade your core hardware (CPU), you might need to buy another OEM key.

Re: Clips move oddity
Thanks very much 8dB.co.uk, A very thorough and helpful reply!
I have decided to just go back to 2018.4 for now. It worked fine and did not have this issue with my system. Someday when I feel motivated I will update to Windows 10 but 7 is just too comfortable. Kent |

Re: Clips move oddity
Thanks 8db.co.uk for the reply, I'm not sure of how to turn off GPU acceleration in PT unless your talking about under video prefs.? If so I tried that and no luck.
Again I may have to install Win 10 Pro. Or as Kw88keys says roll back to 2018.4 |

Like kw88keys I have gone back to 2018.4 until I change to Win 10.
