Not sure where your getting this mine is super solid.... Back in December there was an issue with dealers getting Carbon units (My dealer originally got two then had to wait a something like a month for any more)

Don't know about "work around" but yes it will extend track/voice count.

Here is an excerpt from a Pro Tools Expert article about it.

Quote from Francois Quereuil vice president of Product Management for Avid

“new functionality coming with Pro Tools Ultimate in June. Right now, track count, complexity of mixer and plugins are entirely constrained to hardware. Hybrid Engine will allow sessions to run natively, up to 2048 tracks regardless of the type of HDX configuration, and DSP/low latency tracking paths will be available on demand by clicking a button on track per track basis. It is a game changer for HDX performance.” (note this seems to apply only to PT Ultimate)

Apparently this is going to happen in June And the wording of that paragraph makes it sound like it's a software change and will work on existing HDX hardware which would be very cool for many HDX users

Thanks for info guys.

I'm really afraid to change my hdx firmware. It is finally super stable hdx3 in a 7.1 Mac pro. 2020 pt.

2021 I have on my laptop. It's great. But I am not sure I am emotionally and mentally ready to go hdx via carbon and updating the hdx firmware yet. Because? It's avid. So tempted.

I'm also still using multiple 192i/o. There is also that. Not sure how that plays with carbon hdx engine when it is out.

Carbon is super solid, as is the Hybrid Mix engine with it.

The potential of using the hybrid engine with HDX is huge to me. No need for multiple cards just to achieve a higher track count because you'll be using the CPU to power the mixer which resolves the voice count limitation of the DSP on the HDX card. I think hybrid coming to HDX is going to be a BFD.

But hell, if you can afford a 7.1 Mac Pro and six HDX cards then go for it! More power to ya!

Well to clarify the PT expert article appears to say (unless I missed something ) that the Hybrid engine coming to HDX is not dependent on Carbon Hardware ...... But will allow current HDX users to Use the Hybrid engine via Ultimate software come June.

Here is the link to article

And be aware currently Carbon I/O is not expandable beyond 8 analog inputs and 16 ADAT inputs
I assume your 192's are Digi linked to your Mac, so I am thinking you would not be able to combine them with Carbon

I inquired further on the FB group about the voice count expansion and Francois responded to me with this, which seems like really good news:

This was on the Avid Pro Tools Users group, which I believe is run, or at least moderated, by Avid employees.

I think I am just confused. I thought the hdx hybrid engine is the same as carbon playback engine. I would use the hdx cards with 192s without a carbon interface.

Hybrid Engine for HDX won't be tied to Carbon hardware but it will function in a similar way. It will use the DSPs on the HDX cards in the same way Carbon uses it's DSPs for low latency paths for tracking (or for offloading plugin load to the DSPs) while running the mix engine natively.
