Guides For EQ??
Hi,
I'm trying to learn more about EQ. Could somebody elaborate a little on where these instruments fall into the audio spectrum. And what would be the reasoning behind using a 1-2-6-8-10 band EQ on these instruments. I always rely on my ears, but I figure a better understanding of how this stuff works along with my ears would be better. Guitar Bass piano strings brass vocals |

Re: Guides For EQ??
Cut what you have too much of rather than boosting what you need more of.
Less is more. |

Re: Guides For EQ??
To bad Digi couldn't put the graphics on their EQ modules for LE
It was when I was reading the manuals for my Lexicon gear (MPX1)v that I learned about one of the EQ gotcha's. When shelving the EQ (a lot), the curve is increased in the opposite direction just after the setting. I didn't realize how much it affected the curve until I put the values into the Waves EQ. I was raising the low freq's almost 3 db BTW, I don't trust the T-Racks EQ graphics curve at all

Re: Guides For EQ??
The way i try to pinpoint the "troublespot" is by making the problem actually worse. So lets say you hear some "boxy" stuff going on (usualy means to much low/mid around 1 ~ 2 Khz, maybe even lower) i first start RAISING at those frequencies quite a bit. (6 db, maybe even more) That way it gets realy realy bad, and you know exactly you are on the right spot. Then you can slisde it down, so you actually start lowering those freq's.
Also listen to the track with the eq bypassed every now and then, so you can listen to what you are working with. Make sure you check your results in the mix. Every instrument sounding killing when solo'd will most likely make a bad mix. Try to find the locations where everything is colliding, and then use EQ to correct it a bit

Re: Guides For EQ??
Another tip which works for me is when you get an EQ cut (or boost) that produces the sound you want, try reducing the amount you're cutting (or boosting) by half. I find it's very easy to overdo EQ and this kind of gets around it a bit.
