Default inputs into 002R

hi guys, please bare with me as im only a newbie at this..

i`ve been thinking about getting getting a 002R for my project studio that im setting up, i want to have the ability to record at least 8 inputs at the same time, however i want to be able to record the 8 channels (for drums) using mic pres and as far as im aware there is only 4 mic pre`s`on the 002R. Is there away around this? i`ve heard of a/d converters but im not exactly sure what these are, anyone help?

2nd Q: i`ve been reading on a bands website that they recorded their album with a digi001 into a soundcraft 24:8:2 desk, but how did they get the 24 outputs of the desk into the digi001, dont the desks just mix down to 2 outputs

im sorry if any of this sounds real stupid but its got me perplexed!
thanks
john

There are 4 preamps on the 002r. There are also 4 additional analog inputs that are only line in. The 4 preamps also have the "line in" option. If you want to utilize all 8 analog ins, there are different ways to do it. If you have a mixer then you can use the direct outs or the inserts for each channel in order to send the line out to the digi 002r. You could also buy separate preamps and send the line out of the preamp into the 002r. I don't know what your budget is but you can get an M-audio dmp3 which has 2 channels for about 199, or 129 at certain places. You would need two of these if you're looking to get 4 channels. The 002r also has digital inputs in which you could get a preamp, mixer, or separate A/D (analog to digital) convertor and route it's digital or optical outs to the 002r's digital ins.

A/D convertors convert the analog signal (like that from most preamps or mixers) into a digital signal that you can manipulate through ProTools and your computer. There are many price ranges for these and the more expensive ones usually sound better and can convert the signal to a higher resolution. The 002r (and digi001) have built in convertors that take the analog signal from the built in preamps or line inputs and convert it to digital. The convertors on the 002 are noticeably better than the 001.

If they used a 24 channel board with the 001, they couldn't get all 24 tracks in at once, unless they submixed some of them. The most possible inputs on the 001 is 18, and that's if you utilize all the analog and digital inputs.

Hope this helps,
Jeremy

you can also just plug directly into the 4 inputs on the back of the 002R with HI-Z cables. This is what I am temporarily doing with my 001 until I upgrade to the 002R then save up money for more pre amps. and it doesnt sound that bad if you do it correctly

You can get 4 add'l preamps, eithe rvia a console with direct outputs, or outboard preamps (FMR RNC, HHB Radius 10 come to mind) for pretty reasonable money, and go into the 5-8 line inputs. the 002 converters are much improved over the 001's.

And of course there's also the Lightpipe internfaces, tha give you 8 channels of mic pre to lightpipe interface into the 002, focusrite octapre comes to mind....

Either way, the max output you can get from the 001 nd 002/002R is 18, 8 analog, 8 via lightpipe and 2 via spdif. You can however have up to 32 tracks.
