Default Replacing Macbook Internal Drive with a 7200?

Hi there,

I am looking to upgrade my macbook's (not pro) internal drive to a 7200rpm 100-150G. Just now it is fitted with a 60G 5400rpm. This, for me, is just not big enough. I am worried though, as i hear that the 7200 drive will cause my computer to heat more than it already does (the macbook gets pretty hot with pro tools running...).

Anyone any experiece with this?

Thanks.

A faster drive will generate more heat and take more power (less battery life).

Since you don't put audio on the system internal, a faster drive will not help much with most applications. You will boot faster but that is about all.

I ordered mine with a 7200RPM 100gig. Is it hot? Yes, indeed (kind of nice in the winter)…

Runs great but I have nothing to compare it to. I will say that my gig is as a designer and I was recently working on some billboards that ranged from 500Mb to a little over a Gig. Image Size is a notoriously demanding command in Photoshop. It can use up to 5 times the actual image size to complete an operation.

Using an external firewire as a scratch disk the laptop handled these files beautifully.

Part of that was the ability to read the command (Image Size) from the system disk quickly.

peace

Yes, it is how you work. If I needed to do a lot of swap space with my internal, I would get a faster drive. If I was editing audio or video, I would make sure I had a good external.

My view is the internal holds apps and system software. I store results elsewhere.

Yes,

i suppose the ideal situation would be to have an external firewire drive for my audio and the internal drive be a bigger (100 G odd) but at 5600speed. Best of both worlds.

Just as i need the bigger internal drive for programs etc etc i figured i would be as well jumping up to a 7200.

I assume there are no problems with the bigger sized 5600 internal drives in the Macbook heat wise?

Apple sells them up to 160G.

Thanks for the speedy replies.

Jim.
