PT 7.3.1 - Still Features Random Graphic Freezes

I experienced one of these freezes last night (screen graphics freeze, session still plays, able to stop and start, no spinning beach ball). During the freeze I tried to Quit Pro Tools. When I did this I got a message telling me that the task manager had incomplete tasks. I looked at the task manager and it said it was "synchronizing" the .ptf file from that session.

Not sure how or if this relates, but I thought I would pass along the information. This was on PT 7.3.

1) Cannot start or stop transport from the spacebar - TRUE
2) Cannot start or stop transport from a control surface (state which one) N/A
3) MIDI sequences stop playing - TRUE (played for a while at the beginning of the freeze then stopped)
4) Cannot manually play a virtual instrument during freeze - TRUE (played for a while at the beginning of the freeze then stopped)
5) Plug-in automation ceases to play during freeze - DON'T KNOW
6) Direct 9-pin device control from control surface ceases during freeze - DON'T KNOW
7) Mute automation ceases to play during freeze - DON'T KNOW
8) Volume automation ceases to play during freeze - DON'T KNOW
9) Surround pan automation ceases to play during freeze - DON'T KNOW

When I had the freeze in the PT 6.9 era I could press stop and the transport would stop and the screen freeze would end. Doesn't seem to work anymore with PT 7.1. If I press too many keys or clicks during the screen freeze I get the SWOD.

During the GUI freeze (no beachball), the following occurs -

1) Cannot start or stop transport from the spacebar - TRUE

3) MIDI sequences stop playing - TRUE (plays for a while, then stops. Reminds me somewhat of the old MIDI overflow.)
4) Cannot manually play a virtual instrument during freeze - TRUE (can play a few seconds, then it cuts off)
5) Plug-in automation ceases to play during freeze - N/A
6) Direct 9-pin device control from control surface ceases during freeze - N/A
7) Mute automation ceases to play during freeze - N/A
8) Volume automation ceases to play during freeze - N/A
9) Surround pan automation ceases to play during freeze - N/A

Looks like we are treading water with this!!!

For now we'll have to deal with it!!!

Apparently it's just a few users with this problem and isn't on top of the to do list!!!!

Either we're doing something wrong or all the other users don't use their gear much or they have come to just deal with this.......

Hi Danny,

I think i managed to get a shark time profie during the freeze! i have just missed it a few times, but i think i got the end of this one!!. it did make PT go a it strange during the shark reading and i got an error 9162 and had to reboot PT.

Would you like me to send it somewhere?

To Danny;

each time I experienced a freeze I went to check for modified files on my system. One file that always seem to match the exact time of the freeze is this file: WaveCache.wfm

which protools obviously creates within the session folder....

Now I dont know whether this could be anything to you but I thought I'D report it nevertheless

By the way my WaveCache.wfm is huge - it's about 25 Megabytes - is that normal?

we're seeing that here on multiple systems as well. happens say 1 time every 10 mins. The systems are chasing Serial time code and using transport = machine so when in play and you hit stop/RW, nothing happens till the freeze goes away.

10) Your symptom here While recording or playing back, screen occasionally freezes for 4 to 5 seconds on both G5 dual 2,7 sattions, both HD3 (1 Accel, 1 Process). No crash follows and all goes back to normal afterwards.

So - I am sure that I have found ONE culprit for the freezes

I have set my apple watch to show seconds.

Now, if I happen to be doing any editing in plug-ins or hitting play or record in the interim of protools doing an auto backup - the freeze happens.

With every freeze I watched my exact time and it ALWAYS corresponds to when the session file was backed up.
I am not sure this is the only thing causing the freezes but this is no coincidence. The time matches EACH n EVERY time

I have been getting these random freezes as well and I don't have Auto-backup on.
