This is a cool topic. I was involved in a discussion the other day with a client who has become a good friend and another good friend who works for Digi. My client friend asked my Digi friend his opinion about the POW-r Dither v. L1's Dither and what i heard i found interesting. POW-r is designed very similar to UV22.

The concept that makes UV22 different from other types of Dither is pretty sweet. The concept of UV22 is like this: A specific "clump" of acoustical energy beyond 20K is added to the mix and this energy becomes the LSB. It is supposed to be superior to the simple random Gaussian, Rectangular or Triangular Dithers. When i got my first PTIII system, i was using an AD8000 as an interface. I always used the UV22 because of the 16-bit limitation of the PTIII rig. I thought that the UV22 is what made all the difference in my Digital Recordings.

L1+ gives you the option of the standard Dither schemes. I really began to appreciate it once the 24-bit mixer plug became available and i began to do my 16-bit Bounce for CD. Since Apogee tells you not the use UV22 more than once, i had to find another Dither. Mitch Thomas, from Waves, turned me on the the L1's Dither. After I played with it awhile, I really feel that the L1+'s Dither fits the bill. Although my Digi friend, being a purist, would disagree my feeling is that anything we add to the process should accentuate the sound. Personally, I like anything that excites harmonics in a good way. I really don't hear the "musical sweeteness" in the POW-r dither as I do in the L1+'s Dither.

I prefer POW-R dither #3. To my ears it sounds the closest to the actual source.
