I assume that if it's all the way down counter-clockwise, no gain is being added and this is pretty much unity gain (as close to bypassed as you can get).
That’s not unity, that’s the opposite of unity. Sorry if this has been addressed already in the thread I didn’t read all of it.

If you think of a mixer unity is at zero, Infinity is with the fader all the way down

What did the mbox Manuel say?

Good luck with that, tell your employer to give avid 40 bucks ffor (I’ve got a stuttering problem don’t laugh) a service call and then they’ll answer any question you have, officially speaking

Well, mic input gain can be at unity all the way down (counter clockwise) on a mixer. On the MBox, the only way to reduce the line input gain below unity seems to be to pull the knob and engage the -20dB pad. I really don't know yet.

Anyway, there are quite a few booths at this freelance gig. They might not all have MBox Pros. Some of them might be regular MBox's (which all kind of look the same as far as I'm concerned). This would explain the line input gain issue when I find knob set at 12 o'clock.

I'm no expert on these devices and I don't think I've had to use one in the last 10 years.

About your other comment regarding the $40, I don't know about that one, ha ha! Good idea, but my spidey sense thinks not.

By reading the manual it appears that unity gain (0+/- added gain) is 12 o’clock on the dial.

While it doesn’t expressly say it, it is conferred in context. The manual actually says the phrase at least 3 different times.

It reminds me how easy it was to read the manual and understand the hardware. Avid always did a good job of that IHMO

If it were an output knob, I'd be more inclined to accept that. The manual doesn't make this clear enough for me to use as a source in this circumstance. Don't want to just guess at what it might be.
