If you take a look at the bottom of the S3 surface you will see you won't need tape to attach sidecars, someone has already thought about it... what else they might have thought about? I wish they have thought about a sidecar with dedicated EQ section and a bunch of Function Keys (with LCD scribble strips!). And a surround panner. And a set of encoders that always snap to the plugin that is open on screen.

LOL that was me being sarcastic.

Can you take a pic of that, cause I haven't noticed it.

Nope. I used Artist Series pics for convenience but the "real" unit should be S6 components all around.

And 8 faders per side is fine by me as an option.

Absolutely makes sense to put the assignable section in the middle.

Truly depends on how you work. For me it doesn't, for you it does, so the best option would be to have a modular system where both configuration would be possible. As I wrote before, if the S4 we are proposing stays the same size as it's components, you will have plenty of arm length to reach the last encoder of the 8th column (last column) 4rth encoder row (top row) which is the furthest away without even having to bend/tilt out of position even if you're working with an inline fader configuration.

And if you're like the average man in the united state and have a shoulder width of 18 1/4 inches (for a 5'10" person) and 32 inch of arm length (9 1/8 inch from spine + 32 inch (arm length) = 41 1/8 inch reach from the center of the console), for the average person that would mean you would be able to reach the furthest knob without having to go off axis. Of course that diminishes a bit if your like me and have a bit of a belly

It needs a master fader! Why can't anyone make a control surface with a fracking master fader?

And LED scribble strips.

Nah. A ProTools control surface needs a master fader like a roast chicken needs a submarine.
