Default AVtransfer ? fairlight MT file to PT5?

Hi

I used to have access to a PC with AVtransfer on it - unfortunately no longer the case - I wasn't using it for this but there was an option for converting from fairlight MT file format to Protools

Anyone used this? would they consider converting say a 40 or 50 meg file as a sample?

I'm going to have to buy a PC - which is a major investment - if I'm just to try the demo - need to see if it works with this version of the fairlight format files.... If it works it's a reasonable purchase.. especially as it does OMF as well......

cheers

OMF export/import would be the go.

AVTransfer converts Fairlight ML files (not MT files, you need to export an ML file [Blue-Export] to go along with the MT file [which contains the actual audio]) to OMFI 1,2 or AES31 and vice-versa.

You can't export an OMFI directly from a Fairlight (MFX3+ or QDC), some with the right options installed can import OMFI 1 (very slowly).

I do have AVTransfer at home but I don't think I have anyway of you sending me files that large for you to try. The demo version puts beeps on output so you can verify it's functionality but the audio's no use!

Good luck,
Pete

Replying to myself, there is a ProTools 'plug' now for AVTransfer that adds ProTools session import/export to the other import/export possibilities. It doesn't come as standard with AVT but is a few hundred $$$$ extra. If you already have the Digitranslator option on your ProTools, that, in combination with the standard AVT using OMFI, would be the cheapest option.

thanks for the reply

thought AV could output to PT.. Have experienced the Fairlight OMF import - this time wanna go the other way...

Just put some up on an FTP site- actually found some even smaller files to test if you did have 5 mins to spare....

I just don't have a PC - want to try before I go out there and get one -

tho seeing OSx running on a thinkpad has been a tempting eyeopener...

On the mac front I emailed media magic but doesn't appear to be any one there anymore......

We have AV transfer on one of our servers here and it works pretty well for going between ProTools (Version 5 Only), Nuendo, and Fairlight.

At one time we were using media magic, but I don't think it's around anymore and if it is it's only available on OS9. You'll also need to get a hardware USB dongle from the manufacturer.

I got AVT to transfer OMFIs in and out of Fairlight QDCs originally. I don't actually use it much anymore as I'm mostly on ProTools now. I'll get a chance to try one of your files later, I'll get back to you tomorrow.

MediaMagic is all but dead now unfortunately - it's stuck on OS9 and Ultan seems to be busy doing other things now. There have been vague rumours of one final bug-fix update but it'll still be OS9 I think.

All the best,
Pete

I had a quick go at downloading your files. Just to reiterate, AVTransfer can't read/write MT project files. It needs the MT project file and an ML/ML4 export file to go with it. You create that on the Fairlight with the project open by doing a Blue-Export and selecting the correct options.

Cheers,
Pete
