Default Please.. LAST TRY, MOUSE/KEYBOARD FREEZE:

G4/400yikes/640
Maxter 7200 rpm 40gig, two partitions. (audio only)
10gig Quantum Fireball, Master, (system & LE only)
Midiman 2x2 USB interface
OS9.1, base set, QT 4.1.2
All other settings per Digi recommendations…

OK, I’m at the point of actually considering buying a whole new computer just to end this mouse/keyboard freeze issue. This is the only solution I can come up with.

Dear Digidesign tech support, is this really the last only option available to me?

This disturbs me because aside from this one very annoying problem, I’m very satisfied with my current set up. I have literally tried everything I can think of. My system is more optimized than even what is recommended.

I purchased and tried two different mice, a new keyboard and
USB Overdrive. Tried the original hockey puck mouse. Ran LE with and without third party mouse software extensions and all possible combinations. Reinstalled OS several times from scratch including LE. Reordered PCI slots to all possible configurations. Turned the display upside down while raising the hardware buffer with my left foot in a bucket of warm milk. Trimmed extensions while standing on my head spitting wooden nickels. Zapped P-Ram while singing the Battle Him Of the Republic backwards. Consolidated all my regions into one 17 hour file. Rebuilt desktop 7,846 times (with and without coffee).

Someone please tell me I don’t have to buy a new computer just because my mouse freezes with only ONE app.

I'm not saying this would fix anything, but have you tried OS 9.2? As long as you are going to all of the trouble of doing a clean install of the OS, might be worth a try after you do the clean install from your CD to download and run the 9.2.2 updater. I'm no tech, but that's what I would probably try if I were having issues that might be related to USB.

USB extentions can cause freezes, make sure you disable any you don't need. And try cold milk too. Isn't there a 9.1.1 updater? I use whatever the last 9.1 update is with no problems. Good luck.

dkrausz,
Did you remove the Midiman from the set-up?? Are you using the latest midiman drivers? Do they only freeze when PT is open or anytime your using the Mac? ......... Jeez, sounds like a small version of hell! Good luck man, I feel your pain.

What Crowdog said might be worth a try. Dont just unplug the Midisport but delete the extensions asscociated with it as well.

I had USB trouble with the midisport (no trouble with the mouse/keyboard though - although sometimes the mouse cursor jumps around the screen for no apparent reason.)

I was running OS 9.04 and had to restart the computer before the 2x2 would be recognised. Then I updated to OS 9.1 and midi playback was terrible. I messed around with different OMS versions and driver updates on the midiman website. With the very latest driver for the 2x2 and the latest OMS the device wouldnt be recognised at all even though the the LED was flashing.

Now the device works. I am using OS 9.1 - with 2.3.8 OMS and the 3.0. midisport driver as opposed to the latest 3.0.1

It might be worth a try messing with those things - trying different combinations. I know its not the midisport that seems to be the problem but you never know.

Could you try applying something similar to the USB keyboard/mouse extensions??? I dont know where that is or if its possible! I cant see a keyboard/mouse extension in the extentions list?

What they said.... and...

There are certain applications that will kill my USB keyboard and trackball and it forces me to unplug and replug to get them back. Two applications that do that for me are PowerPoint and Palm Desktop (if I attempt to update my palmpilot).

Try to notice what you're doing at the time your USB devices "take a dive", it may be a particular app or it's drivers that is doing it.

Are you using the supplied USB extender cable with your Yikes G4? If so, get rid of it!
Also, follow Crowdog's recommendation...trash the MIDISport extensions and reinstall fresh. I had similar problems with a b&w G3...keyboard & mouse freezes. I've since moved on to a G4/500 PT|24Mix...still got the MIDISport...no problems.

Hmmm... sounds to me like a USB conflict...

This may be eccentric, however it is relatively painless... have you tried switching where your 3 USB peripherals (anything else? printer?) are plugged? I imagine that you have the keyboard and 2x2 in the computer and the mouse off the keyboard. If you have a USB extension cord or passive hub, lose it. The keyboard is a passive hub too, OK only for a mouse... Try using a borrowed active hub with all 3 on it... good luck

Thanks for the suggestions guys. REALLY!

I do have the latest update for 9.1. It’s 9.1.1 I believe. I also did try the 9.2 update as well and reverted back to 9.1 because of some other instabilities that manifested themselves. I will try running the system without the midiman attached and drivers trashed as some of you have suggested. I think that is the only thing that I have not tried yet. I did try different combinations of how and where my USB devices are connected without success. ALL non essential USB drivers are disabled. I tried with and without printer drivers installed and or connected. Tried with all scsi drives disconnected, pulled the card out of the slot and disabled it’s driver.

I can almost live with the mouse freeze’s since I do just have to unplug and plug it back in. But when the keyboard goes I have to restart because it simply wont come back no matter what I do. As far as what I am doing when it happens? The answer is anything, anytime and completely random. A little more often on very large sessions. LE is the ONLY app installed on that boot drive ( ok… maybe the "apple calculator" and "stickies" is in the Apple menu, I’ll have to check that.. ) My system is so lean it literally boots in less than a minute! Only the essentials, that’s it… I’ve got plenty of ram allocated to LE and DAE. I even went to just going with the BONDI DESKTOP (extra dark)

Bassmac, I tried the cold milk and even chocolate milk! No luck…

I guess my next post will be for some advice on how to convince my wife that I need a new computer. I just told her I was all set for a while (again…) after just purchasing the Digital Time Piece. I’ve actually become a great salesman! I first must sell all my gear to wife before a purchase. When she buys something, then I can get it too…

Thanks everyone, I’ll keep ya posted and keep those suggestions coming!

I had a problem where my mouse and keyboard would freeze when I was using another program (Finale). A friend who is a programmer told me to trash the preferences for Finale. It worked.
Good Luck
