You are trying to drive a screw in with the wrong type of hammer.

Boom is a beatbox type VI. You likely will be much better off with a real drum VI. Toontrack (great starting point), Superior Drummer, BFD (you might even have BFD Lite already, depending on what bundle you have), NI Studio Drummer, Steven Slate Drums, etc....

Darryl - Nice quote, reminded me of Stagecraft class back in High School where we were given screws & hammers and told... "the slots are for taking them out!"

strangedogs - Xpand2 has some Loops that might be useful as well as a variety of Drums (kits and parts). You'll need to sequence your own patterns or import MIDI files with patterns if using the Drum patches. The plug-ins Darryl mentioned (as well as Strike) are cool cause they provide patterns as well as the sounds, but Xpand2 might offer you enough to get started.

Yes indeed. BOOM doesn't do rock. I'll toss a vote for Addictive Drums. You can find it on sale for $99 and it is quite good. Check out the xln website or youtube for some videos on it(or any of the other mentioned drum VI's).

Right now you can get Addictive drums for $84 at AudioDelux.com.
You can get EZdrummer for $62

Look around at all your options like BFD2, Superior Drummer 2, Steven Slate Drums 4, ect.... and purchase the one you like.

There's also some nice Rock loops available for Structure Free over at the Pro Tools Expert blog.

I'm considering buying VI drums, but concerned since I haven't got even Boom to install properly. All in all, been an excruciating install process.
If none of the "free" bundled VI work, will a purchased one work?

I'm in Anti-piracy (NBC Universal), but this is ridiculous.

Thanks for responding! I downloaded and installed on Windows 7:

Pro Tools Express 10.3.4 Installer (Win)
Avid Virtual Instruments Express 10.2 Installer (Win)

I see files and folders in an 'Avid Virtual Instruments' folder, including a 'Boom' folder, but no programs. No such programs appear in 'All Programs' from the start button, and no VI appear on tracks set up as 'Instrument'.

I looked on iLok to see if there are additional registrations necessary/possible, but there are none.

If I buy a drum package like BFD, etc., will I need to register with iLok, or will it show up as an option in an instrument track? I definitely want to put rock drum sounds on.

Thanks!

Are structure free and xpand2 available in your plugin list? does protools express have inserts? I've never used express...
