Re: PT5.0 and Extended drive format
HFS+ is the Apple extended format. It will allow you to create smaller allocation blocks on your hard drives, which will in turn result in more efficient use of disk space with small files.
In practical terms, it means if you are a crossfade fiend, your thousands of fade files will eat up less space. However, there's always a trade-off: It takes a lot longer for an HFS+ volume to "prime" for recording. Because of this, we've added a preference that will allow you to preselect the amount of time (disk space) you wish to record, thus speeding up the process somewhat. Hope this clears it all up. ------------------ --Steve Rosenthal, Digidesign ETS

Re: PT5.0 and Extended drive format
HFS + is supported by FWB and Norton (take care to have the latest versions of HDT, Speed disk and DDoctor or then, VERY BIG crash). It's a great save of place on the disk.
But I still keep one disk in HFS, the one I take to other studios, in case they are using older Mac systems (before 8.1 I think) or importing my session in an Akai DD1500 (OS3) which doesn't support HFS+ regards Jean |

Re: PT5.0 and Extended drive format
I can tell you I had my soundlibrary on a 18GB drive which was full of sounds. After formating HFS+ half of the drive (9GB!!) was available=free.
Isn't that a good thing? The downside was, if I wanted to edit samples with ProTools I couldn't access the drive!! Because ProTools could not read from or write to a HFS+ Drive. NOT ANYMORE! The future is looking bright, man! cheers, Steve |

Re: PT5.0 and Extended drive format
It would be great to support HFS+,...but
The other thing you now need is the ability to dissallow PTs from writing to certain drives. A global preference for this would be preferable. Right now you can accomplish this by having all your drives HFS+ except the ones you use as audio recording drives. There's nothing worse than fade files being written to your system partition. |
