Default after 5 years it may be time for a new build

All the specs in the signature are unchanged except for adding a video card upgrade, water cooling for CPU and a Sapphire 56 that replaced my old 002R.

This PC has been the Swiss army knife of my dreams. Its on all day, every day and it handles video processing web surfing business stuff and of course PT 10.3.8. NEVER has crashed.

Its convenient not having a separate PC that monitors need to be switched back and forth between. I am starting to see the limits. Running VI's and plug ins for 8 channels simultaneously seems to be no problem for this system. I even monitor live thru each channel and their various eq and verbs and to my ears, the latency is essentially zero. Ivory 2 works like a dream.

I do a lot of video processing and that stretches the limits of this system, so I have noticed (when other programs are running). I video record most sessions for evaluation.

It seems there are 2 options: Having 2 systems, 1 killer PC exclusively for PT and use this old PC for everything else OR
Building a killer Swiss army knife PC that does it all (like it is now)

In either case, I assume it should be PT 11 with windows 8, correct?

Windows 7 is better than Windows 8

Pro Tools PC just released some new models with a 24 core coming "soon", if you care

I use Win 8.1 Pro with PTHD 11.2.1 without issue.

So I assume with the new systems there is enough power and compatibility to run 1 computer for a do-it-all PC running PT11, video and business software?

Power yes. But... You still must watch out for software compatibility while running Pro Tools.

If you have been using your Pro tools computer to do web surfing for 5 years without problems (presumably with anti-virus software enabled), I would say you have been extremely LUCKY. My preference is to have a computer just for Pro Tools, not connected to the internet, all recommended optimizations performed, no Windows updates allowed, no anti-virus software enabled. Once everything is proven to be stable, I make a disk image to an external drive in case I ever need to restore to the proven configuration (which I have had to do several times).

[QUOTE=mjslakeridge;2190788]If you have been using your Pro tools computer to do web surfing for 5 years without problems (presumably with anti-virus software enabled), I would say you have been extremely LUCKY.

Avast virus protection is always on, works well with PT and has routinely caught the bad stuff and I am online several hours a day.

It makes sense to have a stripped from network dedicated PT system, I am just hoping there are enough all-in-one experiences shared that would give me confidence in such a build, perhaps the advance of computing in the last 5 years makes this a non issue or something like that.

In what way? Not questioning your statement - I'd really like to know as I've been contemplating moving up to Windows 8 from 7...

I really liked the performance of Win8, while I was running it. Win7 has become the XP you always wanted....stable and works with everything....PT8 to PT11

my dealings with 8 have been trying to help my parents use it and the tiles are killing them
it's just unfriendly to simplify
