PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
I upgraded my RAM last week from 4gb to 16gb on my MacMini OS Mavericks. I already had PT 11 installed prior to the upgrade. When I click on system usage in PT 11 it is still showing only 4 processors. I updated to the new 11.2.1 software update to see if it would recognize the added RAM then but no luck there...When I click on "about this mac" it is showing there is 16GB of RAM and check out my activity monitor they are all firing nicely. So what is going on? Why is PT 11 still only recognizing 4GM RAM when I clearly have a stable 16GB of RAM running on my OS?

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
Huh the number of processors Pro Tools or anything else sees has nothing to do with the amount of RAM. What exactly are you looking at?

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
RAM (real time memory) and processors (the "brain") are 2 completely different things and in PT10 - unless you are running HD or CPTK - you won't be able to accurately see just how much ram PT is using, suffice to say that under a 32 bit system, it will max out at just under 4 gig... so if you want be able to access more than 4 gig, you'll need to move up to PT11.

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
As the others used to explain, Ram (memory) has nothing to do with the amount of processor cores youīve got in your Mini.
Means if you have upgraded your Ram, you will have more memory power now, but you will still have only the amount of processors in your Mini the machine came with once. Itīs just 2 different things. From your description I would guess you use an i5 Dual Core Mini? Itīs because what you were saying is that there are only 4 cores shown in the CPU system usage window in Pro Tools, right? Iīve found a brief explanation from Pro Tools Expert about the amount of processor cores shown in the CPU usage window in PT. http://www.pro-tools-expert.com/home...pro-tools.html Itīs interesting that Pro Tools seems to display the double amount of the processor cores your Mac has got. Iīm no technician at all, so I canīt explain this en detail but this seems to be the way Pro Tools is showing it. Means, if you have a Quad Core processor, it will display 8 "cores" in the CPU usage window in Pro Tools. If you have a Dual Core processor, it will be showing 4. Actually itīs been a good idea to put in 16GB Ram at least, because an i5 Dual Core processor is not the most powerful solution for PT11 anyway. It does work, at least with the Mac Minis (had one myself for a few months using PT11 and it was possible to work with it, however it got to the edge from time to time, which got me to get an i7 Quad finally), but actually PT11 requires an i7 Quad Core processor to work flawlessly as it should. Since using the i7 Quad Mini there have not been any problems here anymore. In the case you would experience performance problems using PT11 with your current Mini, Iīm afraid you would have to get an i7 Quad Mac to solve it too. As to the newly bought Ram you would have to be careful...if your current Mac Mini is a 2011 model you unfortunately could not use the new Ram for a 2012 i7 Quad Core. Thatīs not cool actually but the 2011 and the 2012 models are using different kinds of Ram types. The 2011 Mac Mini models need PC3-10600 DDR3 1333 MHz http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...011-specs.html while the 2012 models need PC3-12800 DDR3 1600MHz. http://www.everymac.com/systems/appl...012-specs.html Iīve checked it again, itīs like that with every single 2011 model as well as with every 2012 model. So you canīt use the Ram from a 2011 Mini for a 2012 Mini unfortunately. If however your Mini is a 2012 i5 2,5GHz Dual Core, you could use the Ram for another 2012 i7 Quad without any problems. Anyway. Hope this clears things up in a way for you. All the best, VRW MacMini i7Quad, 16GB Ram, MBP Mid 2012 2,5GHz i5, 16GB Ram, MacOS 10.9.5, Apogee Quartet+Duet 2, Genelec Active, Yamaha NS10, Pro Tools 11.2.1, Logic 10.0.7, Waves, MCDSP, Duende Native, Softube, HOFA, IK Multimedia, NI etc. |

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
That dual thing is called "hyperthreading", a.k.a. single core is able to process two instructions at once, hence the two threads per core (where supported).

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM. Tons of CPU DAE Errors!
Hey thanks for all of the feedback. I am running the 2012 macmini that I bought a month ago with PT11 to clarify with the earlier responses. The main reason I am concerned is not only does it seem to not recognize or be utilizing all 16gb of RAM, I am getting an extremely amount of DAE errors during playback. The error is telling me that I have maxed out the CPU and I need to reduce the amount of plug-ins. It doesn't matter if I have no plug-ins or 50 plug-ins, I get the error constantly. I am running Mavericks with the latest Pt11 updates. I think this seriously needs to be addressed to Avid. I know a lot of other Mavericks users who are getting this error as well. It is going to make or break my ability to run my studio and I need a solution very quickly!

Also my system is 64 bit to the earlier responses.

(which will appear then when you press+hold the option key). When you are in there, find on the left side "Hardware" > "memory" and look at the main window, look what it is showing. If there are two 8GB panes shown, everything is alright with the Ram and I guess it will be alright as otherwise it would not display 16GB at "about this mac". Why are you saying it is not recognizing it? I hope you have read our postings as we seriously tried to explain to you that if the Pro Tools system usage window is showing "only" 4 processors, it has nothing to do with the Ram you have upgraded!! That only means that your Mini probably uses an i5 Dual Core processor and not the required i7 Quad Core processor. Quote:
What does it say when you open "about this mac" at "processor"? 2,5GHz Intel Core i5 or 2,3GHz Intel Core i7? Itīs just that the processor does make a significant difference with Pro Tools 11. i5 Dual Core processors also use to produce those kind of errors and CPU overloads with PT11, thatīs why i7 Quad Core processors are official requirement for PT11 by Avid. Next thing is, what kind of OS drive are you using? Is it the original HDD which comes with a 2012 Mini? If it is, these are too slow for the use with PT11. These are HDDs with only 5400rpm rotation speed which will not work properly with PT11. And finally, are you using an external drive to run the Pro Tools sessions (including all the audio files) from there or are you using only the built in OS drive for it? This again will not work at all with Pro Tools 11 and would cause such errors and CPU overloads as well. Please, check this all out and come back here to leave us the required informations. Otherwise we canīt help at all. Crazy I'm glad I wasn't the only one who read that and said to myself "what" Did he mention a second audio drive?

Re: PT 11 Not Recognizing My Upgraded RAM
It is the i5 processor. Thanks for clarifying on the processor and RAM on the window performance in PT 11. I wasn't aware of that. I thought the bars on the CPU performance was the RAM not the Processors. I am not computer hardware savvy as most.
I did the about my mac and it has two blue 8gb boxes indicating a total of 16gb. I am not using an external drive. All files are saved on my internal OS. I am running PT 11 with the 003 rack firewire connected with ADA optical 8 channel rack. Late 2012 mini with i5 processor upgraded to 16GB of RAM. I also use the eleven rack via USB and a google nexus tablet as a DAW interface. I run 3 total monitors with the dual head to go and a nord keyboard for midi. The DAE errors are quite annoying and frequent enough to put me incapable of performing just about anything, let alone, bring clients in. It seems to have gotten worse since the newest update to PT 11. |
