Default Pro Tools Hates My New Hard Drive

Just installed a 500G HD that I'd like to use solely for recording. When I try open a new project file on this drive however, ProTools says that its not configured properly for recording. It works fine, but is there something I need to do to a new drive to make ProTools accept it?

PT has no problems with my other drives......

Pro Tools only supports Basic Drive types. It sounds like you have yours setup to be dynamic.

You also may need to open the Pro Tools workspace and set it to be a recording drive ("R") and not playback ("P") or transfer ("T").

Thanks.

How do I do that? Where is that particular menu?

In Pro Tools go to:
Window > Show Workspace (7.x just Workspace)

There are 3 possible settings for drives:
R Record and Playback
P Playback Only
T Transfer

Make sure the drive is set to R.

Note though, as spkguitar has already mentioned, you must first make sure the drive was formatted as "basic" by XP.
Check that in Windows Disc Management.

For information on configuring basic disks, read this Microsoft page.

Opening the Pro Tools Workspace is done from the Window menu in Pro Tools. There's a whole section in Chapter 11 of the Reference Guide on the Workspace, as well as being covered in-depth in the DigiBase Guide.

Here's another Microsoft page for coverting between the two.

Basically, you have to start from scratch and do it the right way.

Hello, I don't know if you have resolved this yet but I had similar problems. Running a Mac MDD (Dual 867mhz) G4, 2 gigs RAM.
I have a SATA PCi card installed and (2) SATA Drives that I use solely for Recording Audio too. I have a System Drive and also another DataDrive I use to store Samples etc!. That's (4) Internal Drives in all. This system has been working well for the past year!
I just upgraded the (2) ATA Drives (System Drive & DataDrive) to Maxtor 250g 7200 drives with 16mb Cache. I am running OSX 10.4.8 (10.4.9 currently not working with PTLE 7.3) and Protools LE 7.3.cs1 with a Digidesign 002Rack System. I upgraded PT's to 7.3cs2 (from 7.3cs1) and PT's wouldn't recognize my drives for Recording or Playback no matter what I tried. In the WORKSPACE BROWSER (Menu->Window->Workspace) it would not allow me to change any of my (4) Drives to Record or Playback, only Transfer.
At deleting Pref's and many other things I reinstalled PTLE 7.3cs1 and BINGO everything works like a dream !!!! Go figure that, what's the difference between PTLE 7.3cs1 and PTLE 7.3cs2 !!!!!!!
Once everything was back up running I opened the WORKSPACE BROWSER again and set my (2) Int SATA Drives for RECORD only, My DataDrive to Transfer Only and my System Drive to Playback only !!
Hope this helps solve your problem..
cheers
dave
