Fire can't propogate in a vacuum. ergo... go to the nearest university, 'borrow' their Elctron microscope's vacuum pump. Place firewire cable in said pump. Optionally, 'borrow' liquid nitrogen tank and place that arounf previous setup so the elctrons move quicker, without causing the friction that starts the fire.

Quite simple really.

I keep a tank of nitrous oxide on hand for just such occasions.

Is that the same as that laughing gas often used in dentistry? Or is that the nitrous used in race cars and computers to make them go faster (or both)? Nevertheless, I'm also very concerned now and wondering about this firewire issue.

Thanks alot

Does FireWire causes fire through the cable?
If it does, what should I do? Just unplug it and put it under water?

Please help!
Be very careful, it is a well known fact that electronic equiptment only works because of the smoke trapped inside, if you let the smoke out it doesn't go anymore.

Make sure you only use clean burning firewire cables.

cheers.

yes, a firewire cable has fire inside, but don't put it underwater or you will ruin the fire in the wire.

I find the Panama Red or Acapulco Gold fire wires burn the best.

By the way, I wonder how long we can flog this topic? It was covered so well at braindead.org at least 13 years ago.

So I guess the prudent thing to do, is to keep a big bucket of water next to my computer? I suppose I could use the garden hose.
Exactly!
The bucket of water beside of the computer is a great idea.
Especially if the Fire Wall doesn't hold anymore and give way to the fire caused by the FireWire!

Okay... I laughed my heart out. It is nice to have some fun time to time.
However Phil has a point by saying:

All these cables have a lot to do with it I think.

Seriously the more wire you have in your studio the more chance there is for just one wire shortcut and the rest is smoking history.
And finally here is a link: Laptop on fire!
