Pencil suddenly quits

Pencil unable to edit audio file wave form (just stays gray). This worked last night - this morning none of my sessions (I have tried many old sessions) will allow me to use the pencil on a wave form. I am able to edit volume, mute etc.
I have installed version 2020.5 after the problem occurred. It did allow on one session, I closed it without saving, reopened it and it would not allow edit.

Anyone have any experience with this problem?

The Pencil tool can't do anything to the audio waveform unless you are zoomed in far enough that the waveform becomes just a jagged line. Zoom preset 5 usually defaults to that zoom level(and you can change any of those 5 zoom presets). Another way to quickly zoom is to highlight a small part of the clip around where you want to edit, and hit the E key(with Keyboard Focus enabled). That will make the selection large enough to fill the window.
