Default Need an opinion about going from 6.4 to 7.1

Hi. I have been using PTLE 6.4 & Digi 002R for about 1.5 years now with no problems on an iBook 1.33 Ghz (OSX 10.3.9). It is literally flawless. I have an external Hard-drive that I use for audio that I connect through USB 2.0 and it works great. I know I should knock on wood, but I haven't had a crash in all that time with lots and lots of tracking. I even accidentally let the computer go to sleep during a BTD once and after waking it up and restarting PTLE, there was no damage to the external drive, the song or anything else. It's a good rig.

I would like to upgrade to PTLE 7.1, but I want opinions as to whether or not I should. Although I'm on 10.3.9, my iBook did come with Tiger install disks, which I've never used only because I didn't want to mess with my success in ProTools. There are a few cool things I like about Tiger that I'd like to be able to use, and there are definitely some enhancements in PTLE 7.x (especially use of Acid Loops) that I'd like to use.

I won't be upgrading to a new Mac for awhile until all the Intel issues get sorted out, so I'm not worried about that part yet. Anyone using a PTLE 7.1/002R/PPC w/Tiger system that can give me an opinion about reliability and performance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

When it comes to upgrading software in my studio, I run 2 disks.

Currently. 1 with OSX 10.3.9, the other with Tiger, I have 6.4 on OSX 10.3.9, and when my wife buys me PT7 for my birthday, it'll go on the other one. I've been doing this since the days of OS9. It's a great way of doing it. You have your current solid system to keep, until you're satisfied your new system is OK. I see you've already got a 2nd external disk, why not give it a try?? If it screws up, you'v estill got your old rock solid one to run on.

Nice idea, thanks, but I'd prefer to keep my second drive for audio only. I was more hoping users who have stable PPC/Tiger/002R/PTLE 7.0 systems might chime in with comments about stability.

i run 6.4 on a dell and it has ran very well for several years

i upgraded to 7.0 for my 1.2ghz, 768 ram, ibook PPC (using 002r) and so far, not too bad

however, i have never ran 6.4 on this ibook (just the dell) and im curious if it would run better

i upgraded from 6.4 to 7.0 last christmas. i run a dual-867MHz G4 desktop computer... which is not qualified by digi for PTLE 7, but works just fine. in fact, it works BETTER than 6.4 did... more plugs, fewer problems. of course, your laptop doesn't have dual processors. nonetheless, my experience suggests that an upgrade will be worthwhile.

Thanks for the replies. Well, I need to keep knocking on wood. Did my upgrade today. System went up to 10.4.7 (one step beyond Digi's most recent approved OS--I couldn't figure out how to not download the "Combined update" and only go up to 10.4.6). Bought and downloaded the 7.0 upgrade (also ordered the CDs for when I eventually get a newer machine). Then upgraded to 7.1 after the 7.0 install. Opened and ran several of my 6.4 mixes with no problems at all. No crashes, no problems.

Also played with importing Acid Loops into the mixes--worked flawlessly.

Then opened iTunes, and CAM popped open instantly and even as I type I'm listening to iTunes through the 002R with no issues at all.

Cool. So far, so good.
