See Meter but no Sound

I open an instrument track, input ALL and select any soft synth, arm track and when I play the midi keyboard I hear the synth as expected.
Now, I want to do the same to an outboard synth. Input ALL, Output to the Midi Interface, Input selected where the preamp comes in. I arm the track and I play the midi keyboard. I see activity on the midi fader, I also see midi being received on my outboard gear, I also see the Meter in PT going - but I hear nothing. Now I open an audio track with the same input selected. I hit record - a waveform is being recorded and when I play back I hear it (!!!). But not in INPUT mode.

Any idea what that is?

Same on AUX input

Just tried to simply play an outboard synth (no midi) live into Protools...I see the meter going but no sound - but when I record it to a track I get a waveform and once I stop recording I can play it back and I hear it. argh...

Figured it out - somehow the Goliath snuck into the aggregate audio. Once deleted we had sound on input.
