Default PT HD and Surround

I am confused about what can be done and what can't be done with PT HD.

So because I am a heavy Logic and Ableton Live user I am more leaning towards going with Antelope or UAD Apollo Interface. Instead of upgrading my computer and then HD3 to HDX.

Can I do Protools Surround with a third party interface like the Orion 32+ and/or Apollo 8p/16?

What are the limitations of PT HD over HDX (other then the host card DSP)?

Yes, surround is built into PTHD software. It doesn't require Avid hardware. As long as you have the HD license and enough outputs, you're good to go.

Maybe...

Do you own or have access to PT HD? If not, getting your hands on it isn't as easy as you would think. You can't buy it without hardware.

I am on PTHD3 8 - so no - I don't have access. You cannot just buy PT HD??

What about the monthly subscription of PT HD 12?

You can only get the non HD12 monthly, not HD12

You have to buy into a HD bundle or cough up around 1200 USD for a HD11 and update that for $999 to support plan status which is well over $2000 for the whole enchilada. And remember that second hand purchases does Not include Avid support if you get screwed over with ebay sales etc.

You do Not have to go on the support plan right away as any licenses for sale are not updated so the support plan which gets you updates and PT13 etc would be a $999 investment otherwise you are stuck on the PT11 license version.

Sometimes they do however that sale is not by an Avid approved dealer so buying on your own risk. Just to keep in mind as $1400 is a LOT of money ...

TCL, since you are on HD8, you can legally upgrade to HD10 for $1500 through the Avid store. This will allow you to use other interfaces and still also use your TDM hardware. However, beyond that if you want to upgrade to HD12 it will be another $999.
