Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
OK a crash with an Mbox 2 Pro, I do realize now you mentioned that before, even though you posted onto a thread about a Mbox 3 Pro (next time start your own though, these issues are not goign to be related).
EDIT: OK a definite crash caused by the Mbox 2 Pro device driver. And (unlike my initial confusion) it looks like you do have the latest "v10" driver (even though annoyingly the kext files list as version "9" grrr (sloppy release management there Avid). Still It would be good to do a forced driver uninstall and resinstall: Download a clean copy of the latest v10 driver. Uninstall the current driver, disconnect the interface. Reboot. install the V10 driver. Reboot. Connect the Interface. Please let us know how that goes. You may have a faulty Mbox 2 Pro - do you have another system you can check that on? Windows or Mac? You dont' need Pro Tools you could just use it as the systems sound output after installing the appropriate driver. |

Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
OK, I uninstalled and reinstalled 10.3.3 drivers to the best of my ability, as per Avid's instructions. (I was surprisingly unable to find DAE, DigiSetup and Pro Tools prefs, not to mention a Library folder inside my User folder—is that a mistake on their end or mine? I see the regular Library folder for my main drive and the one in the System folder. They say to go to users/username/library/prefs/...) Anyway, Pro Tools still runs fine as always. My hunch is that the MBox 2 Pro is fine because not only does it still work OK on my older Mac, but I borrowed someone else's MBox 2 Pro and had the same issue. It can happen upon firing up an external drive or even disconnecting it. I will continue to test today!

Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
Nope. Crashed again on the FIRST disconnect of the computer. Do you want to see the report? At quick glance it looks identical...

If you are trying to trash prefs and not finding your user library files you are following the instructions for the wrong version of OS X. Recent versions hide that folder, hold down the Option key while viewing the finder's Go menu and it will appear in the menu. You should start by following better directions because you may be missing other things... but trashing prefs and databases is not likely to help with a driver that is causing OS X to panic. That is just likely to be a bug in the driver, faulty hardware or a something else horribly wrong in the kernel. Most likely just a bug in the driver, given your other tests, time to look carefully over all other reports of similar problems here or in other forums, roll your OS X version back (may not be an option on your iMac), and/or to contact Avid support. EDIT: Ah "obvious" question... your Mbox 2 Pro is being powered by the wall-wart power adapter right? And you have checked that powets up the box when the Firewire is not connected? Tried measuring the voltage on the wall wart output when the Mbox is being powered by it or best of all just tried swapping that with a wall-wart from a know working Mbox 2 setup? When you borrowed the other Mbox 2 pro. Did you test on different or the same Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter, same Firewire 800 to 400 adapter, and same Thunderbolt (if any) and Firewire cables? Make sure that just the Mbox 2 is connected on the Firewire chain and nothing proceeds the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter in the Thunderbolt chain. I would make sure when you do that test you are trying all new cables and a different adapters, ideally bring the entire known working set of cables and FE800 to FW400 adapter etc. that were already working with the other Mbox 2 Pro. |

Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
I thought I would try to forego the power adaptor again. At the moment I'm trying the second MBox. I'm borrowing a power adaptor with the correct specs from my WD USB drive (I don't think the MBox 2 Pro came with one), and yes it powers with the computer off. I'll try to measure the current it puts out when/if I have to put it back in use. By the way, I avoid Sleep mode completely now, but is it OK to manually put the display to sleep (dragging the mouse to a corner)? Thanks again for all your help.

Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
P.S. I have never tried a different Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor, but I'm ready to test with a different 800—400 cable. Yes, the connection goes straight to the MBox; in fact it doesn't work any other way.

Re: MBox Pro and FireWire/Thunderbolt adapter
OK so now a reinstall of drivers, use of two different MBoxes with and without power supplies, two different 800—400 cables, and I'm still crashing. I can't think of anything else besides going out and getting another Thunderbolt—800 adaptor. Has no one else experienced this? We feel certain it's MBox related and not the Mac itself, right?
