Small studio set-up question!
So currently I use an Mbox2 but I want to recording bands and the 2 mic pre's on my mbox just isnt going to cut it.
What is the best way to go about increasing my mic pre's? Outboard mic pre through the digi003rack or just use the digi003rack+ that has 8 mic pre's or should i just start saving for the HD? anyone have any suggestions? |

Re: Small studio set-up question!
the 003rack+ is a very cool box. Then when you get some more $$ you can add 8 more pre's with a firewire out, this will give you 16 in. Then you could even add 2 more via S/PDIF for a grand total of 18!

Re: Small studio set-up question!
I recommend the 003R (not the + version) and spend the money you saved on a Presonus D8. That gets you 12 mic preamps and 4 line inputs for a reasonable up-front cost. 2 things to know about the 003R+. First off, its 8 of the same preamp as the 003R and, while there's nothing wrong with them(they are clean and quiet), do you really want 8 of them? The other thing that ticks off some users is, the + version does not retain front panel input settings, so if you don't like the default settings, you will be pushing lots of buttons every time you want to record. Of course, some folks don't mind this, but you should be aware so you don't get an unpleasant surprise.

Re: Small studio set-up question!
Yea, im glad i asked. I think I will definitely look into the 003, it seems like you get more for your money than you do the +
My plan after I get out of Recording School here in LA is to have a little home studio while I work my butt off interning somewhere |

Re: Small studio set-up question!
I can really recommend the DIGI003R and Presonus D8 setup.
I have it and the 12 channels are normally enough for small band recordings, even if you record "live". If you have some extra $ you can buy one or two additional good mic pres (like the SPL Goldmike or similar) and hook them up to the 4 line inputs on the 003. I think the 003R+ is perfect if you don't need the line inputs. If 8 mic pres are enough for you, go for the 003R+. The 003R has less mic pres, but is a little more flexible in adding outboard pres/compressors/etc on the line inputs. (On the 003R+, you could still add them via s/pdif or adat inputs) Andy |
