Activate PT11 Without Installing?

Hello,

I just purchased the upgrade from PT9 to PT11, mainly to get in on the $199 year-end special.

I'm not really that excited about trashing my perfectly stable PT9 system, but AVID states that to get in on their new "support" and "upgrade" plan, the upgrade must be purchased AND ACTIVATED before the end of the year.

So, here's my question...Is it possible to ACTIVATE the PT11 upgrade (transfer the PT11 installer into "Your Products" section in the AVID Account) and transfer the license into the iLok without actually INSTALLING the software?

And if so, would the installer remain valid and available in my AVID Account indefinitely?

If this is possible, it would buy some time and enable me to take things in a little less pressured manner.

Yes and no.

You CAN go ahead an surrender the PT9 license and get the PT10/11 combo license on your iLok without installing PT11.... but then you won't be able to run PT9 because you have to surrender that license.

Why not just use PT10?

This is the first I've heard about surrendering my PT9 license. What a drag.

I guess using PT10 is an option, but it still means having to leave my known-good stable system, which is what I wanted to avoid for a while.

It looks like I've entered the "Upgrade of No Return".

'Dumb question, but I'll ask anyway...I know you get the PT10 license with the PT11 upgrade, but does that include the actual PT10 software itself?

Yes, you will get access to download the PT10 software.

The mandatory surrender is mentioned in the FAQ's

It's typical to surrender an old license for any software/plugins when upgrading to a new major version for a steep discount.

You will have PT10 and PT11 installers in your account once you register it to your Avid Account.

You can even do a co-install (both PT10 and PT11 installed on the same computer) in many cases. Sometimes it's not supported but still works, sometimes it won't work at all.

Uh Oh.

I just bought today the PT 11 $199 upgrade to get in by year-end.
I don't just yet have a PC/Mac it will run on. Still shopping.

I MUST activate it by Dec. 31? I do have a new iLok and Eleven Rack that come with PT LE 8.

What exactly does activation mean? I am assuming that surrendering the old license and moving the upgrade/cross grade PT 10/11 license to an active iLok makes the license active for support qualification purposes.

I assume this is not the same as registering your new software if you bought it from a reseller (like Sweetwater). You still need to register it, correct.

I also would assume that if you bought your upgrade from the Avid store that your software is automatically registered since it shows up in your account.

Yeah, it's kinda murky. It's possible all they mean by "Activate" is enter your code online so the iLok license is delivered to your iLok account. But the license is not active (i.e. can't be used) until you surrender your old license. I can ask for further clarification, no promises though.

Struggling to Activate PT11 upgrade.

Have Activation Code from Sweetwater.

Log into Avid Account.

Go to Activate and Download.

Enter Code.

Asks to "Verify" account.

Enter information.

Despite being logged into my account and being about to see my purchases, it can't verify my account and I have to contact customer service.

I have contacted them via the process as well as Sweetwater. If this doesn't get resolved by 12/31, they better not pull some bureaucratic nonsense and say I don't qualify for support since I didn't activate by 12/31.
