Default Gibson buying Cakewalk

Actually ran into this over on the EW/Soundsonline forum - Gibson is buying Cakewalk. For the few that don't know Cakewalk are the ones that put out Sonar daw software (and a few other things). See this article:
http://www.cakewalk.com/Press/releas...+2013+-+Gibson
Apparently according to this release a new Tascam Professional Software division is being created and that is where Cakewalk/Sonar is going. A couple of things I wonder about (ex-Sonar user here): did Gibson make Roland an offer they couldn't refuse or is Roland in trouble? Really it's only been a couple of years that Roland bought Cakewalk. And given Gibson's past history of killing off companies and products they buy - what's to come of Cakewalk?

Not sure if this will be as big of loss to the pro audio world as studio vision and the opcode midi interfaces were, but I would definitely be nervous if I were a Sonar/cakewalk user.

I still have an Opcode USB midi interface in my ProTools HD rig.

Sold all of my studio 4s and studio 5s several years ago, but kind of regret not keeping one around. Every so often I run into a situation where I could have used it for routing midi.

I don't think they bought opcode with the intention of killing it off, and there are various theories as to why opcode was killed off, but regardless of what actually happened the history is still there so it makes us all a bit nervous when we see gibson buy a DAW company.

Someone told me that opcode's programmers ended up at apple, which would definitely explain why audio midi setup looks so reminiscent of OMS.

Robot Guitar anyone?

Hey, While your whittling out all that tone wood and reducing it to sawdust on the shop floor why not install a full blown DAW in the control cavity.

While I doubt this will end well Henry J does seem to have the ear of the bankers. So its entirely possible that there's some good IP that needs a financial shot in the arm to be brought to market.

While I don't have any interest in Sonar I would hate to see a long time player founder in the market. Competition is always a good thing.
