Where,

You should have a band come to that set up.

Unfortunately they will probably spill beer on the rug.

CCash,

Do you think Auralex MoPads would help? They're only $30, it might be worth a shot.

Later,

Peter

Thanks for trying to help! The monitor pads probably work great for someone who has their speakers on a console bridge. Fortunately mine are on their own sturdy stands, so there's no direct coupling to the desk.

What is a descent pair of economic monitors? I just bought a pair of M-Audio SP-58's for $300. (didn't have a lot to spend) If anything, they are a hugh step up from the Boston Acoustics computer speakers I was using. For some time I was using Sony MDR-7506 headphones but it was suggested not to use headphones because mixes will come out inaccurate. Is that true? I'm still fairly new at this, so please pardon my lack of knowledge. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

There is a definite advantage to mixing at lower volumes.

1. You don't have to fear that you get a hearing damage after a few hours, fatigue is probably your worst enemy even if you don't actually damage your hearing. It doesn't make much sense to invest big dollars in monitors and tuning your room if your ears are tired.
2. I'm pretty sure about one thing concerning rock music: If your mix sounds powerful on low volume it won't sound weak when you play it loud. Just watch the low end.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Of course the headphone mix will sound good on many headphones.
But try to get a listening environment wich sounds good with commercial music, and you will be on the right track.

Headphones are fine to check you mix every now and then as its quite easy to pick phase and stereo image problems on good headphones, but i would advise against using headphone as the main source for a mix. This is partly due to the fact that speakers interact with the evironment while headphones do not, and most people use speakers to listen to music not phones, so if you mix purley on phones you may find that you mixes are not translatting well to various speakers. I always advise checking your mix on a variety of speakers and phones before calling it 'finished' and while its fine to track things with phones if you need to ( the guitarist may be in the same room ) dont do your final mix using phones alone.

PS: I use a pair of AKG K301's and they are amazing...
