just for fun
what was the single greatest piece of hardware/software that dramatically changed your sound for the good? ... was it a microphone? monitoring speakers? outboard gear? plug-in? heat? or what? ... for me, it has to be the AKG414 microphone, sounds best on vox, bass, guit cabs, everything!.... share your storys!

Re: just for fun
The day I realized that presets and online tutorials could only get me so far, so I started using my ears instead. Ahh, that was a good day.

Re: just for fun
Back in the early 1970s, I got a UREI LA-3 on the advice of a co-worker. I really had low expectations. My previous experience with dynamics was not that great & I avoided them whenever possible. (I admit I never tried a LA-2.) I was amazed by how well it worked with everything that I did with it. I eventually got 3 more.

Re: just for fun
There are so many things but the one thing that sticks out for me is when I realized that most FREE Plug-Ins suck. Now there are some great free plug-ins and the stock Pro Tools plug-ins are nice but if you really want to perfect this craft you are going to have to spend some money on plug-ins.

Re: just for fun
AES/EBU [Enc.] out of the 192-interface -> Benchmark DAC1 -> XMON -> Dynaudio BM9 sub -> Genelec 1030A's.

Re: just for fun
I think McDSP ML4000 Native is my favorite software altho the new Channel Strip is coming in a very close second now.
