AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950x

Hello all - any PT experience with this chip compared to the new Intel i9 7900?

16 cores and 32 threads sounds impressive - but never utilised AMD before.

I doubt anyone has much experience with either chip, as they're both brand spankin' new, but I can tell you that both would be massive overkill for music production.

That's essentially workstation grade hardware, and unless you're doing serious number crunching (Maya, CAD, multi-layered video editing) you'll never see the benefit of that many cores (although the access to all that RAM could come in handy).

Maybe save some money and find a last gen i7k on sale(?)

I don't think a more powerful computer would be overkill, especially for software like PT. More so if you are using lots of hungry plugins and Vi's. I'm sure workstation-grade hardware would guarantee a more stable experience, if the hardware is compatible. Remember, a few years ago, people said 32GB of RAM was overkill. Now, it's quite common to see 48GB and 64GB.
