Default Strange digital noise on input 9-16 Avid HD I/O 1616

Hi

During a recording session lately some really strange thing happened within Pro Tools.
I have connected 4 Avid HD I/O 1616 to a Thunderbolt Native card.

On this particular recording gig I only used 32 tracks. It was during a concert recording suddenly I got some strange noise on channel 9-16 on the first Avid HD I/O 1616 interface.

Ill add some pics and I also bounced a mix of the distortion. It only happened once during the 1 hour recording. Thankfully I had a backup rig so It all went well in the end.

Since it happened on channel 9-16, could there be an issue with the input card? Or any issues with the thunderbolt connection? Any suggestions?

Here is a link to how the distortion sounded like:https://www.dropbox.com/s/nn3kgmm64l...Noise.wav?dl=0

Thanks for all help :)

Any external clocking involved?

I think clocking errors would spike on every channel, not just 9-16

Right. and to answer the OPs question... the causes are likely the analog input card or something external on the analog IO side or possibly the IO chassis. It is nothing else, not Thunderbolt, not the Thunderbolt box, not the DigiLink cables, not the computer.

How it could be external is stuff like a horrible signal/high voltage etc applied to one of the inputs of that card. That might or might not be possible to do without noticing with the other device recording stuff. If you are using line amps etc suspect those. Suspect anything anywhere in that input path that has button that somebody can press.

Ok thanks for the tip. I think I ll do it and then do a long test recording with Pro Tools checking if the noise reoccurs.

No , everything is clocked from this "faulty" HD I/O 1616 which stays at top in a rack of four 1616

I think so too..

Yeah, agree!

There are connected 12 similar preamps on the 12 first channels, And the noise are on channel 9-16, so nothing is wrong with the preamps.

Thanks for all help
I will reseat the card and do a very long test recording. If there is something wrong with the 1616 I think the noise will happen again.
