Trying to import audio of .mpg file

I'm trying to import the audio of what originally is a .MPG file , onto a track in PT 8. Doesn't allow me to select this file for importing.
Saved the movie in quicktime as a .mov It allows me to select this file, get the prompt box to tick import audio but I just get a frame of image imported.
Tried dropping file into audio folder, no result. Any clues to head me in the right direction ?

convert the mpeg1 file into a more daw friendly format. we use the excellent (and free) mpeg streamclip.

You can also just export the audio only.
