Default Pro tools 12.8.3 Windows 10 / Threadripper * important info *

All,

For us who have taken the Threadripper 1950x (16 core / 32 thread) plunge with Pro Tools and Windows 10 and have experienced hell, I would like to share my fixes.
I realize Pro Tools doesn't officially support AMD hardware at this moment.

1. UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE. The latest firmware contains the newest AGESA code to help resolve issues with memory speeds, timings, and CPU issues.

2. Use a watercooler for Threadripper (air cooler just doesn't cut it)

3. From my EXTENSIVE testing, Windows 10 build 1703 (2017 Fall Creator's Update) works the best currently. (I am testing preview build 1803 on a different box). 1709 seems as it contains just a horrendous slew of bugs that results in poor performance from Pro Tools (random slowdown issues and such). I am unsure what the direct cause is, but whatever is causing it the 1803 preview builds are much, much quicker on response times on AMD Ryzen / Threadripper systems. Besides, 1709 really felt like a half-assed finished build anyway.

4. Use the AMD software Tool to fine-tune threadripper. This tool will allow you to enable / disable cores, SMT, and tune memory performance, plus show voltage and cpu temp (important).

5. It seems as if the Radeon graphics cards with the newer builds of Windows and newest Windows 10 drivers have some sort of performance issue with some desktop apps. Again, I don't know the reasoning behind it, but, begrudgingly I switched to an nVidia card and the issues went away. This may depend on size of monitor being used, how many, resolution mode, etc. Again, this was many many hours of frustration in troubleshooting.

6. Make sure you install the latest AMD chipset drivers for Threadripper. The current build is December 2017.

7. Here comes the big one.. TURN OFF SMT (simultaneous multi-threading) using the AMD software tool. PRO TOOLS just doesn't like the way AMD handles its SMT versus intel. This will bring your CPU to a 16 core / 16 thread CPU. Who cares? It's fast as hell already and SMT is better used for video encoding anyway. Once you turn it off, you'll notice a vast improvement in response in pro tools.

8. Finally got 12.8.3 to work correctly after all these tweaks.
9. The midi issue I was experiencing was due to me accidentally elbowing my midi keyboard and turning some layer type feature on by mistake. Once I turned it off, my midi notes were no longer duplicating and layering under themselves.

10. Make music.

My request to Avid is if they can fine tune Pro Tools to take advantage of AMD's new CPUs correctly. AMD isn't going anywhere for a long, long time.

Out.
