I'd forgotten about this guy,, he deserves a separate list ,, not necessarily the greatest producers ever,, but worthy of note,, along side Lee Townsend and Mitchel Froom and Tchad Blake,,these guys are all able to capture the sound of the performance fantasticly,, and then do cool and interesting things during the mix that arn't superfluous but add to the performance
,, this is especialy true of some of Tchad and Mitches productions,,Los Lobos, and Neal Fin jump to mind cose i listen to them all the time,,,
the first Fiona apple record is depressing as all hell,, but has a phenomenal sound and was so far a head in it's use of loops and unusual processing,,i just got to listen to it again the other day and was blown away buy it,, the second one was not so good,,
i'd also include Chris Vrenna , my personal favourite,, in this list,,,and also Trent Razner and Charlie Houser,, is that how you spell it,,?

I agree about the first Fiona Apple CD. That CD sounds amazing, and I also think it's far superior to the second........however, not because of the production................although, I also agree that it was ahead of it's time and sounded amazing and original (for the time)......but, the first cd just had much better songs and vocal performances from FIona and to me that is what made it a better album. The second one has the same vibe and sound as the first one, but with just a smidgeon less stuff going on (but not much less). On "Tidal," I think the end result was the combination of of Andrew Slater's ear for sound and Jon Brion's eclectic musical chops that made that truly an album that stands far above many other pop albums. The whole thing was very organic, it was hard to tell where live performances stopped and loops began.

Yeh really- Lanois and Eno both are unbelieveable...
Somebody said something about Pagey more as an engineer than a producer- i totally disagree...
Steve Albini is definitely a great choice too...

Interesting, lots of "one trick ponies" in there.
I gotta throw in my vote for Rick Rubin.
Master of so many different styles (Beastie Boys, Slayer, Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, etc, etc).
Bottom line, it's all about preference.
How about some great producers that we may not have heard, and their best album?
Now that I've said that, I can't think of anyone!!

PS, not my fav, but no one mentioned Phil Spector...
