Default Importing tracks and bounce to disk issues

I recently had the following issues, working with a hip hop artist. Guy brings a cd with his music I import it into pro tools as usual. The music sounds slower. I don't notice this cause this is the first time I hear it. We record his vocals I give him a rough demo. He takes it home and calls me back says his vocals are off tempo. I burn myself a cd and listen to it over cd player and the vocals are late. I listen to the cd and then listen to the same tracks on pro tools and low and behold the music is slower on pt than on the cd.

Now just yesterday I recorded a band the recorded music was great. Played back fine. I go to give them a rough mix and again problem this time the music and vocals were fast. I didn't make the mistake of not doing 16 bit 44.1 bounce to disk. we listened as it was bounced and all sounded fine but when it got on the CD every thing played fast. Now get this I take that two track import it back into pro tools and guess what it's at the right speed. So I bounce that down but ths same thing happens? What's up with that?!

My system consist of pro tools 7.4.2 on a Mac G 5 running osx version 10.5.8 its a 1.6 ghz power pc g5 4 gb ddr sd ram. Digi 003 rack

Here is how I am recording some of my tracks. I have pro tools slaved to an adat via light pipe recording @ 48 k and have 8 different mic pre amps going through the adat lt analog using an rca - 1/4 inch snake to my mic preamps I get my signal into pro tools via light pipe. I've been doing this for years with no problem.

I've checked my I/O it's correct I checked my ADAT settings input analog out put digital that's correct or I wouldn't have got my tracks recorded with out having pops and clicks. I am not new to doing it this way. I don't understand how or why this is happening. I believe I did make some updates to my computer recently and I haven't recording anything since before the updates.

I didn't document what I updated either, not smart I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really need to get this situation corrected quickly I have some upset people on my hands!

Thanks

Why are you recording at 48 when a CD is 44.1?

Could be that you are not SRC when transferring to CD. Or you are importing 44.1 material directly to a 48 session.

Do everything at 44.1 and you will live longer! There is no audible difference between 44.1 and 48, IMHO.

Why because I get better results. The bounce to disk converts the 48 k recording to 16 bit 44.1 CD quality, this was not an issue until now. Some thing has created a conflict since I updated my computer.

In response to the other question. When importing audio from a CD to a stereo track it is 44.1 of course. I was recording at 48 k again this was not an issue in the past. When importing audio from a CD into pro tools is suppose to convert the audio to 48 k and it's not doing it anymore for some odd reason. So the audio is played back slower than it should. But when bouncing to disk it speeds it back up and the vocal tracks are now off.

Yes, you have changed something. Make sure you have enabled the SRC and that you are changing 48 to 44.1. The system is not converting the sampling rate, perhaps because something has been unchecked.

There is no better quality using 48 and then converting to 44.1 vs starting out with 44.1. There is no audible difference.

You would have less trouble if you used 44.1.

Exclamation Re: Importing tracks and bounce to disk issues

No I don't think it's an SRC situation. I had pro tools being clocked by the Adat at 48 k. if some thing would have gone wrong it would have gone to pro tool internal or there would have been clicks and pops when you record enable a track. The recordings sound fine. The problem occurs when I bounce to disk.

I actually tried to open 44.1 session and import from the original session then bouncing again with the same results?
I even tried to buss this to two tracks and still same results. The music is fast. I am confused

From the manual:

Sample Rate
This option lets you save to any of several sample rates. Choices are dependent on your Pro Tools system and Pro Tools audio interfaces.

Sample Rate Conversion Quality
If you choose a sample rate that differs from the original sample rate of the session, the conver- sion options become available. You can configure the conversion quality, and schedule con- version to occur during, or after, the bounce. See “Sample Rate Conversion Quality Option” on page 1068 for more information.

What file type are you bouncing?

What quality setting do you choose?

"Sample Rate Conversion Quality Option
When you specify a different sample rate for a bounced file (for example, when mixing a session recorded at 96 kHz to 44.1 kHz for release on an audio CD), Pro Tools uses the Conversion Quality option to determine the quality of sample rate conversion used.
There are five possible settings, ranging from Low (lowest quality) to Tweak Head (highest quality). The higher the quality of sample rate conversion, the longer it takes to convert the bounced file."
