Default SPDIF question on 001

I am using an 001 with an Alesis AI-3 for additional inputs. I have had my eye on a TC Fireworx processor for a while, but all of my inputs are used up. So, I have two questions. Can I use the SPDIF connection to both send and receive from the 001 to the Fireworx? Also, could I use the 2 001 outputs to send to the Fireworx and the SPDIF to return from the Fireworx to the 001 (the Fireworx has SPDIF of course).

Thanks for all your help everyone.
