Just guessing, but from my software engineering experience of days gone by, it could have something to do with the UI libraries Avid uses for cross platform development.

That said, I don't find the single window concept anything more than a minor irritation. It's trivial to stretch the main window across both monitors and set up the windows however I like across both. However, I very much like the docked window capabilities of most other apps, and I also like the tab capabilities.
On giant monitors it's not a big deal, but at modest resolutions the multiple title bars eat up an incredible amount of space. And it's kludgy feeling!!! It looks like something from the 1990's honestly.

I suppose so, and it's not ideal, but I would find tabs and docked windows a lot more useful.

You would LOVE the Digital Performer gui then. Cluttered beyond belief with small fonts.

What does font size have to do with tabbed windows and dockers? Really an off the wall comment IMO. Tabbed windows are time savers, and dockers de-clutter things. Completely unrelated to font size.

Going back to the original post, the ability to put the mixer outside the app window is a convenience. All of these things could be added to PT to make it better.

The font size has nothing to do with tabbed windows & dockers. I mentioned it because it's a part of DP's gui as kind of a warning that while DP has what you want in tabs/docking/etc. it has the bugaboo of small fonts.

That's OK, but I'm not sure why you mentioned it. I didn't mention DP, and I have never seen it. I did mention Samplitude, Reaper, Studio One, and Magix Vegas Video editor. They all do docking, tabs, and can do separate windows on dual monitors, and those capabilities are very useful. The font sizes are fine on all of those apps.

If DP has a bad UI, that's a negative thing of course, but it really has nothing to do with the discussion of using separate windows across dual monitors. But to be fair, I was guilty of taking the discussion a different direction myself by bringing up tabs and dockers. My bad. But I did try to frame that thought around the idea that those things were more useful to me than separate windows.

Avid has made decisions in the past to maintain parity between operating systems, and they've always supported the concept of easy migration from one ProTools rig to another... for example, unlike other DAWs we remain unable to add or change key bindings, which is sold as a benefit, and not a limitation. So I think it's a drag that ProTools under Windows sacrifices screen real estate and has a kludgy back pane under Windows. And it's been going on for how many years/decades now?

Personally looking ahead to my next major DAW system upgrade, I am not confident that Apple will offer a suitable platform. The new mac pro is a waste of money as offered. I would like to be able to consider migrating completely to Windows. But personally, the kludgy ProTools display under Windows is a major stumbling block. I understand some people won't feel it's such a big deal... but for me it is! I go back and forth between an older OSX version of ProTools at work, and a modern version on Windows at home, and even with the added features of the modern version, the whole "feel" of it is off, primarily because of the ugly screen tiling. I totally get why some people wouldn't think it was a big deal, but hey what can I say... it bothers me!
