Default Re: Aphex Aural Exciter?

Yesterday was my first use of the Avid Aphex in a project. Despite what I'd said I'd do, I used it inline and after tuning the frequency and tweaking for five minutes it really helped the Lead (and only) Vox. Might still work it in parallel as an alternative to see what the differences will be.

As an Ozone 7 Advanced guy, I have it's Exciter as well. Closer to the Avid Aphex, but not the same.

Simon, I also have the Blackbox. I reach for this to saturate, not excite. Do you put an EQ in front of the Blackbox in parallel or something like that? I'm actually using Blackbox on my 2 Buss in this session to add grit.

I do like eqing before saturation/exciting that way you can carve out the frequencies you don’t want enhanced as much and boost others that you do.

Often it’s just subtle moves, but it can be worth the extra effort for the most part. I’ll usually do it later in the game when I’m fine tuning the mix to save wasting time on details that won’t matter in the end. It’s not just the HG-2, it’s the Waves Aphex Aural Enhancer or Vitamin, or the VSM-3 or whatever I have at my disposal.

I’m actually in the middle of designing a rather detailed parallel process that I can employ in the very mix. Not based on anyone else’s approach, that I know of, just building one from scratch using my own experiences as a basis. Not there yet though.
