Running 11.3 (installed with the correct installer from dec. 23) on 10.10.1. Suddenly this morning the video engine refused to launch (this is on my Mac Pro 5,1 - so obvioulsy not an issue of a "supported" mac or not). Since then, I have reinstalled Pro Tools 3 times, restarted, repaired permissions (I thought why not), and I'm still unable to launch this damn engine. The good news is that I have a screening tomorrow, and I need this to work badly right now. My only option will be to do it from Digital Performer if I can't get it to work.

In the past I had a similar error 2 or 3 times and quitting Pro Tools usually did the trick. But not this time, it's more than frustrating because this time it's kind of urgent, and it happened out of nowhere. I've looked at a few forums, there's no answer, no solution. Actually I wouldn't say it's frustrating, it just pisses me off


(activity monitor shows the engine normally for a while, then at about 80% of the "waiting for the video engine to launch" status bar, it turns red and stops responding...)

hmmm back to 10.3.9 for now...(at least it works)

As for Digital Performer, it can't even import an AAF properly!

Try using OMF and DP will work fine.... AAF has issues...

Another confirmation PT 11 will never be installed in any of my studios.

Thanks I'll try it with OMF instead - although PT 10.3.9 works just fine as well. fwiw, I never had a single issue with PT 11 until now. Now that I'm home, on my old and trusty MacPro 1,1 11.3 has no problem launching its video engine - go figure!

I will add that:

the affected Mac Pro (Mid-2012) doesn't use a video card (BM or anything), I never installed MC or Symphony, video engine worked just fine on PT11 until now on this machine, I have 40GB of ram. If I have time today I will try some of the "solutions" mentioned in this thread and report back.

Follow-up to my Video Engine problems...

I've actually been able to find a solution (fingers crossed): After discovering that Digital Performer wasn't able to import any video either (!), I thought the problem maybe was more OS-related than specific to Pro Tools. Then I created another account (admin) and......after launching Pro Tools, the video engine launched just fine in the new account. I opened my project without any trouble, and video is back in 11.3!!!! wheew... Now, in my continuing investigation, I found something interesting: in the Activity Monitor with both accounts open, I see a video engine running (the one from the latest, fresh new account I just created, where Pro Tools runs fine), but here's the thing: it's called "AvidVideoEngine". In my older account, if I launch Pro Tools and try to activate the AVE, a new one (of course) shows up in Activity Monitor, but this time it's called "Avid Video Engine", with spaces (until it stops responding obviously). That's weird. So I've looked inside the Pro Tools package, precisely in the frameworks folder, and the Video Engine is indeed called "AvidVideoEngine" without spaces. So where does that come from?

I'm glad it works again, but I still can't figure why it stopped working 3 days ago, and why I can't get it to work in my "older" account, and why I see two seemingly different video engines (not talking about different PIDs I know how it works so please don't go there)

Anyway, I thought it was worth mentioning for the mods/digitechsupt reading this thread.

I'm absolutely frustrated about Protools 11HD , I was happy with my Protools 10 with CPTK , everything worked so fine until I decided going to 11 last december.The video issues are so annoying , so embarrasing and I just can't understand why AVID decides to change it.They sell something that doesn't work.Speed up your workflow they said.Video freezes all the time on H.264 , DVCPro 25 , the only codec that worked nice is DNX HD , but it is too heavy , a jpeg with 25 minutes is 1.5 Gb and it turns to 39 Gb after converting to DNX HD and took more than 2 hours to convert.My client lives in NY and I live in Sao Paulo (Brazil) how ca I ask then to send a DNX HD video for reference.
It was the last time AVID get my money , praying for a new developer to build a new DAW , so I'll move.

I read all of your post. And i have the same problem with the Avid Video Engine.

Video works on Pro tool 10.3.9, but not in the last 11 version. The problem is that i have a laptop and a tower pc, and the video works in Pro tools 11 on my laptop !

When i look to task manager i can see that the AvidVideoEngine.exe is work and so activate. But on ma tower pc when i want to start the video engine, the AvidVideoEngine.exe open and close just after.

I run it as administrator, create an other user session, but it doesn't work... I don't understand where is the problem and why it's works on ma laptop and not my tower pc (they run on windows 7 64bits pro for both).

Can someone help me please :'/
